Reactions
Oxidation
Oxidation and reduction take place together at
the same time in the same reaction. There are
three definitions of oxidation. oxygen is added
to an element or a compound, an element, ion
or compound loses electrons, the oxidation
state of an element is increased.
OXIDATION STATES - The oxidation state is a
pr
number assigned to an atom or ion
in a compound which indicates the degree of
oxidation or reduction. For example – O2-
Has and oxidation state of -2
Reduction
yThere are three definitions of reduction. It is a reaction
in which: oxygen is removed from an element or a
compound, an element. ion or compound gains
electrons or the oxidation state of an element is
decreased. Oxidizing agents are substances that gain
electrons from other substances. E.g. – Oxygen.
Reducing agents are substances that donate electrons
to other substances, leading to the reduction of the
latter. E.g. – Hydrogen and metals
Half Ionic
Equation
To understand Half ionic equations we must know what an
s
ionic equation is. Ionic equations are used to show only the
particles that actually take part in a reaction
These equations show only the ions that change their status
during a chemical process
The other ions present are not involved and are called
spectator ions. So in a neutralization reaction with the net
ionic reaction as H + OH- the oxidizing half equation will be
2H⁺ (aq) → H(g)₂ + 2e⁻ and the reducing half ionic equation -
2OH⁻(aq) + 2e⁻ → H₂O(l)
Uses of
Redox
Reaction
Redox reactions are central to corrosion, an electrochemical
process where metals oxidize upon exposure to elements like
oxygen and moisture. In this process, the metal undergoes
oxidation by losing electrons, leading to its degradation.
Galvanization, a technique used to protect against corrosion,
involves a redox reaction where a sacrificial layer of zinc is
s
applied to steel or iron surfaces. This sacrificial zinc layer
oxidizes preferentially, shielding the underlying metal from
corrosion by serving as the site for oxidation instead.
