● What is the story of your name?
○ Take 1-2 minutes to discuss with your
neighbour(s) why you were given the
name you have.

Why do we feel the
need to explain
things?
Why do we feel the need to explain things?

● We are looking to be understood.

● We have different life experiences than others, leading to different
understanding.
● We are making sense of the world ourselves.
● And MORE!

It’s important to know how to communicate yourself in a way that is thoughtful,

direct, and researched!
Knowing Your Audience
It is very likely that your language changes depending on who you are around.
This can be the words you choose, the topics you deem appropriate, or the
variations in your voice.

How do you speak when…

● With your friends?
● With your family?
● Around older people?
● Around young children?
● At a funeral?
● At a wedding?

You need to know who you are trying to connect with, as that may influence the
language you use!
Discuss It!
Each group will be given the same topic but asked to discuss it with different
demographics in mind.

Topic:
The Dangers of Social Media

Demographics:
1) Grade 6 Student
2) Grade 11 Student
3) Grandparents
4) A Social Media Influencer
5) Parent or Guardian
6) Police Officer
7) A newcomer to Canada, where English is not their first language.

Think about the language you would use, the topics you would OR would not
discuss, and the words you might choose to make impact.
What is an Expository Essay?
● There are four main types of writing:
○ Narrative – Tells a story
○ Descriptive – Detailed words to “paint a picture”
○ Persuasive – Persuading the audience to change their thoughts
○ Expository – Explains a concept and shares information.

○ Expository writing is:

■ Informative
■ Based on research
■ Analyzing, thinking critically, explaining processes

○ Expository writing is NOT:

■ The place to be cute, clever, or edgy. The facts should speak for
themselves.
Types of Expository Essays
● There are five different types of Expository Essay:

1.Classification
2.Definition
3.Process
4.Compare-and-contrast
5.Cause-and-effect
Classification
● These essays typically focus on types of things within a topic. For example:

● Different kinds of herding dogs

● Ways to impress a first date
● Ways to get suspended
Definition
● These essays define a subject by presenting clear facts. Topics could include:

● A historical world event

● A sport or activity
● A particular skill
Process
● These essays walk the reader through the steps of completing a task. This
might be centred on:

● A recipe
● Instructions
● Achieving a goal
Compare-and-contrast
● These types of essays examine the differences and similarities between two
things:

● Dress codes at two different schools

● Diets and workout regimes
● Cities and their amenities.
Cause-and-effect
● These essays get into how specific events and/or actions caused others to occur:

● Social media impact on personal relationships

● Effects of air pollution on public health
● Beginning to binge watch a TV show, and the
after math.
Our steps over the next few
weeks...
● Choosing a subject that we would like to write about.
● Doing research - finding enough evidence to back up what
we want to explain.
● Working through the different parts of the essay,
introduction, body paragraphs (3-4), and conclusion
● Go over citations and do peer edits
● Finish with a teacher edit .
Brainstorm
Write down THREE topics/issues that you’d like to learn
about on a piece of loose leaf. You should cover the
following:

● #1: What do you already know about the topics/issues?

● #2: What new knowledge do you want to gain?
Brainstorm Example
TOPIC: Overcoming a drug addiction

#1: What do you already know about the topics/issues?

● Injection sites in downtown Vancouver (controversial)
● Some addictions come on gradually, innocently
● Fentanyl is extremely dangerous → small amount is deadly
● Addictions counsellor at the SRSS - recovery cannot be forced

#2: What new knowledge do you want to gain?

● Is drug abuse going down now that marijuana is legal?
● Are some personalities more prone to addiction/substance abuse?
● Is brain damage from drug use permanent?
Proposal
● After you have brainstormed three topics/issues, you need to propose your
essay to me to begin researching. Choose one of your three brainstorms to do
this on BEFORE you begin researching.

● You need to make sure your essay is not too broad or too narrow, and that’s
where I can help! Use the provided paper and complete the following
information:

1. Purpose: Why do you want to research this topic or issue?

2. Main Ideas: What might some of the main ideas you will explain be?
3. Audience: Who might benefit from reading a piece like this?
4. Context: Where might a piece like this be found?
Proposal Example
Topic: Different genres of EDM music

● Purpose: Why do you want to research this topic or issue?

○ I listen to this music often, and people are confused why
○ There are many different kinds that others don’t know about
○ I use it to work out often.

● Main Ideas: What might some of the main ideas you will explain be?
○ Different styles and the target demographics
○ Founding DJs, influential people
○ Music festivals

● Audience: Who might benefit from reading a piece like this?

○ Someone new to the community
○ People who are looking to find similar artists to those they like

● Context: Where might a piece like this be found?

○ Online forum, Instagram
Research
● After you have proposed your essay to me, you are cleared to begin your
research.

● Your goals when researching are to:

○ Collect information from credible sources
○ Identify your main ideas (3-5)
○ Create a clear idea of what your “thesis” will be.
