COMPUTER, APPLICATIONS

AND SYSTEM SOFTWARE

BY HOORIA RASHID
INTRODUCTION
Definition of Software: Software refers to the programs and
applications that run on a computer, enabling it to perform various
tasks.
Two Main Types:
• System Software: Manages the hardware and core functions.
• Application Software: Helps users accomplish specific tasks.
WHAT IS SYSTEM
SOFTWARE?
Definition: System software is
designed to manage and control
computer hardware and provide a
foundation for running application
software.
Examples:
Operating Systems (OS): Windows,
macOS, Linux.
Device Drivers: Software that allows
hardware to communicate with the
OS.
Utility Software: Maintenance
programs like antivirus and disk
cleaners.
FUNCTIONS OF SYSTEM
SOFTWARE

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT: HARDWARE COMMUNICATION: SECURITY AND MAINTENANCE:

ALLOCATES CPU, MEMORY, AND MANAGES INTERACTIONS PROVIDES FEATURES LIKE USER
STORAGE TO DIFFERENT TASKS. BETWEEN HARDWARE AUTHENTICATION, SYSTEM
COMPONENTS AND SOFTWARE. UPDATES, AND VIRUS
PROTECTION.
IMPORTANCE OF SYSTEM SOFTWARE

Foundation for Applications: Without system software,

applications wouldn’t have the platform to run on and would be
unable to interact with hardware.
System Stability and Efficiency: By managing resources, system
software ensures that the computer operates smoothly, avoiding
conflicts between programs and optimizing performance.
Security: System software helps protect the computer from viruses,
malware, and unauthorized access, ensuring data security.
FUTURE OF SYSTEM SOFTWARE

Artificial Intelligence Integratin: More

operating systems and utilities are
incorporating AI for predictive maintenance
and performance optimization.
Cloud-Based Operating Systems: With
the rise of cloud computing, operating
systems may rely more on cloud
infrastructure to manage resources and
applications.
Increased Security Features: As cyber
threats grow, future system software will
place a greater focus on security features,

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER
APPLICATIONS
Definition:
• Computer applications, also known as software applications, are
programs designed to help users perform specific tasks.
• They run on top of the system software and provide user-friendly
interfaces to work with computers.
Purpose:
• Applications make it easier for users to perform tasks such as creating
documents, editing images, browsing the internet, and more.
CATEGORIES OF
COMPUTER
APPLICATIONS
Productivity Applications
Examples: Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs
Purpose: Help users perform office tasks like
writing, data analysis, and presentations.
Graphics and Multimedia Applications
Examples: Adobe Photoshop, CorelDRAW, Final
Cut Pro
Purpose: Used for editing images, creating
designs, and working with audio/video content.
Web Browsers
Examples: Google Chrome, Mozilla
Firefox, Safari
Purpose: Allow users to browse and
interact with the internet.
Communication Applications
Examples: Skype, Zoom, Microsoft Teams
Purpose: Enable users to communicate
via video, audio, or text across distances.
GRAPHICS AND MULTIMEDIA
APPLICATIONS
Definition: Applications used for creating
and editing visual, audio, and video
content.
Examples:
• Adobe Photoshop: Image editing and
graphic design.
• CorelDRAW: Vector-based design
software for illustrations and logos.
• Final Cut Pro: Video editing software
used in film production.
