What is Information and Communication Technology

• ICT refers to a diverse set of technological


tools and resources used to communicate
and create, disseminate, store, and manage
information.
• ICTs are our computers, internet,
broadcasting technology – radio &
television, and cell phones.
What is Information and Communication Technology

• The use of the ICT enables e-learning.


• There are varying opinions on e-
learning. Some people are for it; others
are against it. They view it as an
usurper which aims to replace the
classroom.
Significance of ICT in education
• Students gain worldwide access to
information and are exposed to said
information through ICT
• ICT enhances interactive teaching and
learning styles.
• ICT provides many opportunities for
creativity.
Significance of ICT in education
• It keeps students fully engaged as it
stimulates their creativity.
• Students can complete tasks wherever
they are and interact with their
teachers.
Through ICT, students can:
• Assess, select, and interpret information
• Review and modify their work to improve the
quality.
• Communicate with each other and present in
groups
• Evaluate their work
• Improve efficiency
• Be creative and take risks
Through ICT, students can:

• Gain confidence and independence


• Sort and process text and data quickly and efficiently
• Save, record, edit, and adapt their work quickly and
efficiently
• Form their own opinion
• Develop the skills to use e-environments and new
technologies
• Learn to express themselves
Roles of the students
• The student must know why and
what he/she needs to study.
• They must be able to design and
stick to their personal study plan

• The teacher is a facilitator/guide who helps
learners
• The teacher is an advisor, an expert in the
field, who supports the student’s
development.
Use of ICT in Language learning
• ICT can be used to acquire knowledge in the following areas of
language learning: grammar, writing, reading, and speaking.
• The following are tools that are effective for language learning:
– Radios and TVs
– Films
– Language laboratories
– Overhead projectors
– Youtube
– Web-based learning; long-distance learning
– Email and blog
– Skype, iPods, cellphones
Use of ICT in Language learning
• It is used to learn new vocabulary.
• It is used to form personal opinions
and express said opinions on issues.
• It is used to learn ESP – English for
Special Purposes
Use of ICT in Language learning
• It supports previously acquired knowledge
from the classroom.
• Self-tests can be taken online
• Group work and pair work can take place in
class.
• PPTs are used to give attention-grabbing
presentations
Benefits of e-learning
• Dematerialization: Less paper; more trees.
• Individualization: Students can pursue their
different interests based on their needs and
level of learning.
• Social contact beyond the immediate
university, state, country, and continent.

• It provides creative and individualized
options for students to express their
understanding
• Learning is no longer teacher-centered; it

CONCLUSION
ICTs make the learning process more
stimulating and challenging. The
experience is interactive and
adaptable. There is a gradual build-up
of difficulty.
