1.

As an assignment before doing the

activity, ask students to create a photo
collage of their favorite artist in an Oslo
Paper and bring it on the next meeting.
Ask them to bring blank Oslo papers,
scissors or cutter, and glue or tape as
well.

2. On the day of the activity, ask

students to bring out their photo collage.
Call on some students to tell their chosen
artist and show their photo collage to the
class.
3. Ask students to think of a shape, a
letter, or a design that best represents
their favorite artist. Cite examples so they
will have a clear idea on what you’re
asking them to do (e.g. Heart, Lightning,
Letter “J”).

4. Once students thought of their design,

instruct them to draw it on a blank Oslo
paper. Instruct them to draw it in such a
way that it will occupy most of the space in
the paper depending on the design they
chose.
5. After drawing, instruct them to cut out the
body of the design they’ve drawn using scissors
or cutter so that parts of the paper with designs
on it will become an empty space. Doing this will
make the Oslo paper look like a rectangle with
cut out designs.

6. Once students are done with their cutouts,

instruct them to place the Oslo paper over their
collage then ask them to tape or glue it. In doing
this, only parts of collage within the cutout parts
of the paper can be seen. Use this to introduce
Clipping Mask to the class.

Mastering the art of typography can elevate your
designs to new heights, but it's not just about choosing
the perfect font. Understanding the nuances of kerning,
leading, and tracking is what sets a professional designer
apart from the rest.
What is Kerning?
Kerning is the process of adjusting the space between two
individual characters in a font to achieve a visually appealing
and readable text.
Importance in typography: Kerning plays a significant role in
typography for the following reasons:
1. It improves the readability of the text, especially in
headlines and large font sizes where character spacing is
more noticeable.
2. It ensures that characters don't appear too close together
or too far apart, creating a balanced and harmonious look.
What is Leading?
Leading refers to the vertical space between lines of text in
a paragraph, which is essential for maintaining readability
and aesthetic appeal in typography.

Importance in typography: Proper leading is important for

several reasons:

1. It ensures your text is easy to read by preventing lines from

being too close together or too far apart.
2. It helps maintain a visually balanced layout in a paragraph or
an entire page of text.
What is Tracking?
Tracking is the adjustment of the overall spacing
between characters in a block of text to create a
consistent visual appearance and readability throughout
the text.
Importance in typography: The significance of tracking
in typography includes:
1. Achieving a consistent visual appearance across a
paragraph or a larger body of text.
2. Enhancing readability by ensuring that character
spacing is neither too tight nor too loose.
