Introduction

Purpose → to explain why your study is needed

Components of introduction:
•Statement of the problem
•Literature review
•Justification
Methods
 Purpose → to describe how you collected,
organized and analyzed data that are
relevant to the purpose of the study
 Organize into logical subsections that
illustrate the steps you took to collect,
organize and analyze the data
 Describe what you did, not what you
found
 Describe original methods in detail;
otherwise give references
Results
 Purpose → to describe the results of data
analysis that are relevant to the study
 Describe what you found, not what you did

 Systematic presentation of your findings in

relation to the research objective is crucial
Discussion
 The findings can now be discussed by
objective or by cluster of related
variables , which should lead to
conclusions and possible
recommendations.
 The discussion may include findings from
other related studies that support or
contradict your own.

Conclusions and
recommendations
 Conclusions can be short

 The conclusions should logically follow the

same order.

 The recommendations are again placed in

roughly the same sequence as the
conclusions.

 It may be summarized according to the

groups towards which they are directed

Annexes or appendices
 Contains additional information needed to
enable professionals to follow the research
procedures and data analysis.
 Information that would be useful to special
categories of readers but is not of interest to the
average reader can be included
 Examples are:
 Lists of hospitals, districts, villages etc. that
participated in the study
 Questionnaires or check lists used for data collection.

References
There are two methods of referencing
 The references can be numbered in the sequence in
which they appear in the report and then listed in
this order in the list of references (Vancouver
system).
 For an article Author(s)’ Surname followed by
initials. Title of article. Name of Journal. Year,
Volume(number): page numbers of article.
 For a book the following information should be
noted. Author(s)’ Surname followed by initials. Title
of book, Place: Publisher, year, Edition

References cont’d …
 Another possibility is the Harvard system of
listing in brackets the author’s name(s) in the
text followed by the date of the publication
and page number. In the list of references, the
publications are then arranged in alphabetical
order by the principal author’s last name.

 Example: Abramson JH (1990) 4th ed. Survey

methods in community medicine. Edinburgh:
Churchill Livingstone
