Bridge Cum Bandhara
Introduction
 Maharashtra has tradition of constructing Bridge Cum
Bandhara (BCB), where bridges are used for dual purpose
i.e. crossing the river and also to create limited water
storage. They are popular as they can serve dual purpose
of crossing as well as a water storage structure. Such
structures have been used to tap post monsoon flow to
create storage not exceeding 3.50 m. There is urgent need
of time to save and utilize the after monsoon water that
would have been flown away. In most part of the state the
steams run dry only a short period after the end of
monsoon. In many areas artificial water is supplied by
tankers just after monsoon.
PROBLEM DEFINITION
In our country, where many rivers run dry after the end of
the mansoon, it is a need of the day to store the post
mansoon flow for drinking, irrigation, etc. Scarcity of water
can be understood from the fact that for the 1st time in the
country Section 144 was enforced in the Latur City of
Maharashtra to avoid water conflicts and the 1st Jaldoot
Special Train was operated for 4 summer months by India
Railways from 11th April 2016 to transport the water from
Miraj in Osmanabad to Latur covering a distance of 343
km. Initially, the 1st ‘Jaldoot’ carried 10 tanker wagons
each carrying 50,000 ltr water and later, the number
wagons were increases to 50 to carry 2.5 millions of water
and supplied nearly 240 million ltr water through 111 trips
to Latur and some adjoining areas.
PROPOSED METHODOLOGY OF SOLVING
IDENTIFIED PROBLEM
 Ministry of Road Transport and Highways [MoRTH], Govt. Of India,
New Delhi has also decided vide it’s letter dated 18th April 2017 that
hence forth, The bridge sites for all new bridge structure and old
abandoned bridge structure can be use for taping for water
conservation for improving recharge of ground water and availability
for drinking water supply, etc. By constructing Bandhara / Barrages /
Weirs. The ministry of Jal Shakti, Govn of India has already begun
water conservation in 255 district in the Country to provide water to
the people.
 In order to conserve water, Bandhara/ barrages types structure may
also be constructed on downstream site of bridge structure to store the
water upstream. In this type of structure, barrage is designed has
secondary structure in the downstream of bridge with piers and high
the gates limiting to 3.5 mtr or so to store water in the last phase of
Monsoon. The pond level of the Bandhara is fixed to harness the
maximum storage with no submerges and land acquisition. The water
stored within the river banks will not required additional plan
acquisition and hence the scheme can be popular.
