Two Sample Independent T Test
Two Sample Independent T Test
Independent T test
What is the two-sample t-test?
• The two-sample t-test (also known as the independent samples t-test)
is a method used to test whether the unknown population means of
two groups are equal or not.
•=
• df = (
Example:
• One way to measure a person’s fitness is to measure their body fat
percentage. Average body fat percentages vary by age, but according
to some guidelines, the normal range for men is 15-20% body fat, and
the normal range for women is 20-25% body fat.
Our sample data is from a group of men and women who did workouts
at a gym three times a week for a year. Then, their trainer measured
the body fat. The table below show the data.
Group Body Fat Percentages
Men 13.3 6.0 20.0 8.0 14.0
19.0 18.0 25.0 16.0 24.0
15.0 1.0 15.0
Women 22.0 16.0 21.7 21.0 30.0
26.0 12.0 23.2 28.0 23.0
• STEP 1: Ho: There is no significant differences between men and women on
body fat percentages.
• STEP 2: Ha: There is a significant differences between men and women on
body fat percentages.
• STEP 3:
• STEP 4:
a) = 13 – 1 = 12
b) SD men = 6.84, SD women = 5.32
= = = 561.43
= = = 254.72
c) = = =
d) Mean men = 14.95, Mean women = 22.29
c) df = (
STEP 5: if , then reject null hypothesis
2.080, then reject Ho
Example 2:
• A statistics teacher wants to compare his two classes to see if they
performed any differently on the tests he gave that semester. Class A
had 25 students with an average score of 70, standard deviation 15.
Class B has 20 students with an average score of 74, standard deviation
25. using alpha 0.05, did these two classes perform differently on the
test?
STEP 1: Ho: There is no significant difference between the performance of
class A and class B.
STEP 2: Ha: There is a significant difference between the performance of
class and class B.
STEP 3:
STEP 4: Class A: mean = 70, sd = 15, n = 25
a) = 25– 1 = 24
Class B: mean = 74, sd = 25, n = 20
b) = = = 5400
= = = 11875
c) = = =
d)
a) = 70 - 74 = -4
b) = = 6.01
c) df = (
STEP 5: If , then reject null hypothesis
2.017, then accept Ho
Using the z test criteria
P - Value Interpretation
P < 0.01 Very strong evidence t or z = -0.67
against the null
hypothesis P = 0.2514
0.01 0.05 Moderate evidence
against the null P value = (0.2514)(2) = 0.5028
hypothesis
0.05 P < 0.10 Suggestive evidence
against the null
hypothesis Since 0.5028 0.10, then accept Ho
0.10 P Little or no real
evidence against the
null hypothesis
Task
• Teacher Cherry is a Mathematics Teacher. She’s claiming that class B is
performing better than class A. Is teacher Cherry claiming the correct
stand point? The table below shows the sample score of students
under class A and class B.

30 28 47 43 44
32 33 48 46 40
Class B 40 42 43 45 35
32 38 37 31 44
