INTRODUCTION
PART 01

Phaneendra-civil engg. dept. 10

OBJECTIVES :

On completion of this period ,you would be able to :

• Define quantity surveying and estimation.

• Know what is Quantity surveying & Estimation.

Phaneendra-civil engg. dept. 11

Introduction
We need quantity survey and estimation in a
project

• To know the probable cost of the project.

• To know the quantities of different items of works.

• To get Sanction of money/budget from administrative & technical

authority.

• Materials required for project.

Phaneendra-civil engg. dept. 12

Quantity Surveying is defined as

• Estimating the quantities of different items of works.

(or)

• Listing of quantities of all possible items of work required

for construction of a structure.

Phaneendra-civil engg. dept. 13

Measurements are

In the form of

Length,

Breadth &

Depth or Height.

Phaneendra-civil engg. dept. 14

Units

Depend on
Nature,

Size &

Shape of the item of work.

Phaneendra-civil engg. dept. 15

Units of measurement

• All measurements are to be made in SI units.

• Length - mm or meter.

• Area - mm2 or meter2.

• Volume - mm3 or meter3.

Phaneendra-civil engg. dept. 16

Units of measurement of certain item of works

• Earth work excavation - volume - Cum.

• Plastering - area - Sqm.

• Wall length - running unit - m.

• Colouring to walls - area - sqm.

• Flooring in rooms - area - sqm.

Phaneendra-civil engg. dept. 17

Specification

• It describes the nature and the class of the work, materials to

be used in the work, workmanship etc.

Ex :
• Cement concrete (1:4:8) in foundation.

• 12 mm thick plaster to walls in cement mortar 1:6.

• Painting to doors and windows with enamel paint two coats

over one primary coat.

Phaneendra-civil engg. dept. 18

Types of Specifications

• General specifications
Ex: Cement concrete

• Detailed specifications
Ex: Cement concrete(1:2:4) with 20mm size HBG metal
including cost and conveyance of all materials , labour charges
for centering, laying, curing etc., complete

Phaneendra-civil engg. dept. 19

Estimate

• It is defined as computation or calculation of the required

quantities and cost of an item of work or given items of
work.

• To estimate the cost of an item of work, we require the

rate per unit quantity.

Phaneendra-civil engg. dept. 20

Types of Estimate :

• Approximate estimate

a) Plinth area estimate,

b) Cubic rate estimate.

• Detailed estimate.

• Other estimates.

Phaneendra-civil engg. dept. 21

Analysis of rates :

It is the process of arriving at the cost of an item of

work per unit quantity by

• Taking rates as per standard schedule of rates & Lead

statement

• Prepare data sheet

• Arrive the cost of an item per unit

Summary

We have discussed about

• Introduction to Quantity surveying and Estimate.

• Definition of quantity surveying and estimates.

• Units of measurement.

• Analysis of rates.
