DISCUSSION PROPER

COGNITIVE
PROCESS
COGNITIVE
- Is the process of acquiring and understanding
knowledge through our thoughts, experiences, and
senses.
LEARNING
- It is a process by which an individual acquires
knowledge, attitudes, and skills that are necessary
to meet the demand of life.
ATTENTION
- It is a procedure for selecting an object on which to
focus. An object can be physical or abstract, such as
an idea that exists in the real world or in the mind.
MEMORY
- It is a process for storing, finding, and accessing
knowledge.
THE FACTORS OF
COGNITIVE
• HEREDITY – Our ability to learn is influenced by
neurological efficiency and genetic component.

• ENVIRONMENT - This may include learning

opportunities that provide learning avenues.
UNITS of
COGNITION

Concept Schemata
• General labels that we attach to
categories of things and information • organization of the mind
that share common characteristics. ( mental structure )

Prepositions • Schema is a knowledge

• related concepts
• units of declarative knowledge
that can stand alone

Productions
• Procedural knowledge
• things made or created which are
composed of our knowledge

• representations that set the framework for

SOLVING
STUDENT-CENTERED
INSTRUCTION

Students are actively involved in

the learning process.
ACTIVATING PRIOR
KNOWLEDGE

• Prior knowledge plays a major

role in constructing meaning.
• Experiences
SOCIAL INTERACTIONS

Are necessary for students to

develop authentic learning.
PROBLEM SOLVING

Students' problem-solving is
enhanced by connecting a
concrete object or another cue to
the task.
ELABORATION

• We avoid the memorization of basic

facts.
• Student expands target information by
relating other information to it (ex.
creating a phrase, making an analogy).

ESSENTIAL PROCESSING
• OCCURS WHEN THERE IS POOR • IT IS NEEDED WHEN THE INHERENT COMPLEXITY
INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN AND STUDENTS’ OF THE MATERIAL IS BEING LEARNED.
PROCESSING DURING LEARNING DOES
NOT SUPPORT THE LEARNING OBJECTIVE 3
GENERATIVE PROCESSING
• SHOULD BE DEVELOPED WHEN STUDENTS LACK
THE NEEDED MOTIVATION.
