LIBRARY AUTOMATION
INTRODUCTION
Library Automation started with the use of punched cards in 1880 by Hollerith. It
was used to tabulate the US census data. The library at the University of Texas used
punched cards in 1936 for circulation control. Library of congress used Unit record
machines for the production of catalogues in 1950. Thus, many libraries in US
follow the system in automating their operations.
The 2nd era was in 1960’s with the advent of computers, notable ventures were
MEDLARS and MARC.
Allows a patron to find a book with ease if the author, title or subject is
known
The library catalogue assist patrons to find the location of a book in the
library.
