Introduction

 Operating system is a program that manages the computer

hardware.
 It provides basis for the application programs and act as an
intermediary between the computer user and the computer
hardware.
What Operating Systems do

 A computer system can be divided roughly into four components:

1. The hardware:
• The central processing unit (CPU), the memory, and the input output (I/O)devices
_provides the basic computing resources for the system

2. The application programs:

• Such as word processors, spreadsheets, compilers and web browsers _define the
ways in which these resources are used to solve users computing problems

3. The operating system:

• OS controls and coordinates the use of hardware among various application
programs for various users

4. The user

What Operating Systems do…

 The operating system provides the means for proper use of the
resources in the operation of the computer system.

 Operating system is similar to a government. Like a government,

it performs no useful function itself. It simply provides an
environment within which other programs can do useful work.
User view

 From the user’s point of view, the operating system is designed

mostly for ease of use, with some attention paid to performance
and none paid to resource utilization _how various hardware and
software resources are shared.

 Performance is important to the users; but rather than resource

utilization.
System view

 From the computer’s point of view, the operating system is the program
most intimately involved with the hardware. In this context we view
operating system as a resource allocator.

 A computer system has many resources that may be required to solve a

problem: CPU time, memory space, file storage space, I/O devices etc.
The operating system act as the manager for the resources.

 We can also define OS as a control program that manages the execution

of user programs to prevent errors and improper use of computer
system.
