WHAT IS AN EDITORIAL
CARTOON?
•It is an illustration expressing opinion

and interpretation
•A subtle attack presented humorously
•It is also called as “wordless editorial”
WHAT IS IT’S PURPOSE?
•The main purpose is not to amuse you
but to PERSUADE you. A good political
cartoon makes you think about current
events, but it also tries to sway your
opinion toward the cartoonist's point of
view.
IN CREATING AN EDITORIAL
CARTOON
1. You have to understand the topic
2. Roughly draw a sketch of the idea
that you like the most

•Do not make the political cartoon too easy to analyze.

cartoonist’s opinion on a topic and provoke
readers to think and clarify their own opinions
•Thinking skills are much more important than
drawing skills in creating a good cartoon

•A good cartoon is always simple and limited

•Drawing should be uncluttered
•Heavy, cleaner lines are better for the
newspaper than many light lines

•Any word used (captions, dialogues balloons
or words that are part of the drawing itself )
should be large, clear and easily recognized.
•If your cartoon is clever and gets across your
opinion, you’ve done a good job.

•Makes use of a minimum number of labels

•Shows logical use of various sizes, dimensions,
proportions of images
•Displays attractive use of shading and other
techniques
•Utilizes witty, original and creative representation
of ideas/ concepts on the issue given
CONTENT ---------------- 60%
•Presents clear, specific and humorous angle on the given

issue/topic
•Raises relevant, timely issues and concerns about the
topic
•Is in good taste, free form libelous, indecent and abstract
ideas
•Arouses interest and influences opinion of its readers
•Constructively criticizes and influences reader’s opinion
ETHICS ------------------- 10%
•Showcases original work of students
•Properly cites information and attributes these facts
from the source of information (cut across all events)
•Observes standards of journalism in terms of
fairness, relevance, accuracy, and balance
•Has no potentially libelous or obscene content,
plagiarism, and copyright violations

•Read, read and read .
