Carlos Bulosan
Carlos Sampayan Bulosan was a Filipino novelist and poet born in 1913 in
the rural village of Mangusmana, Binalonan, Pangasinan. He spent most
of his life in the United States, where he wrote the semi-autobiographical
Americas is in the house. Bulosan left his home country at age 17 to find
salvation during the American colonial period. Upon arriving in Seattle,
he faced racism and low-paying jobs, working as a farmworker and
dishwasher. He was active in the labor movement and edited the 1952
Yearbook for International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 37.
After years of discrimination, starvation, and sickness, Bulosan
underwent tuberculosis surgery, losing most of his ribs and lung function.
He became a prolific writer and voice for Filipinos, publishing novels like
The Laughter of My Father and The Cry and the Dedication. His works are
commemorated in the Carlos Bulosan Memorial Exhibit at the historic
Eastern Hotel in Seattle.

Emmanuel Agapito Flores Lacaba
Emmanuel Agapito Flores Lacaba (December 10, 1948 – March 18, 1976),
popularly known as Eman Lacaba, was a Filipino writer, poet, essayist,
playwright, fictionist, scriptwriter, songwriter and activist and he is
considered as the only poet warrior of the Philippines.
Lacaba was killed on March 18, 1976 in Tucaan Balaag, Asuncion, Davao
de Norte he was set to go back shortly to the city for a new assignment
that would have used his writing skills, and had even agreed to write a
script for Lino Brocka once he got back there. He was 27 years old.
