PERIPHERA
Installing
LS Computer
Systems and
Networks
LO 1: Plan and Prepare for
Installation
WHAT ARE
PERIPHERA
LS
A peripheral is a device or
hardware that can be
connected internally or
externally to a computer for it
to have more capabilities and
functionalities.
CARD
Cards in computers are known by the
following names: Expansion Card,
Expansion Board, Adapter Card,
Daughter Card, Daughter Board (or
Accessory Card). It is a base board that
supports and wires the components in
most electronics.

They are inserted into the expansion slots

of the motherboard or backplane (a group
of electrical connectors in parallel with
each other) to add to the functionality of
the computer system.
VIDEO / GRAPHICS
CARD
A video card is a type of expansion
card that creates images in a
display. There are video cards that
offer specific functions such as
video capture, TV tuning, the
capacity to link multiple monitors
such as in a desktop virtualization
setup, and so much more.
SOUND CARD
Also called sound board or audio card,
a sound card is an expansion card that
enables the input and output of audio
signals to and from a computer.

It is also used to process and deliver

the audio component of a computer
system, which may translate as sound,
audio effects, and music that may be
used in editing video or audio-only
presentations and entertainment media
for multimedia applications. Recent
computers have built-in sound
capabilities.
NETWORK
CARD
The network card is also called an
Ethernet card and network adapter.
It is an expansion card that allows
computers to communicate over a
computer network.

It allows users to connect to each

other either by using cables or a
wireless connection system.
SLOTS
If you are just starting to learn how to install a
computer system or want to buy a card, it is
important to understand first the different kinds
and number of slots that you have on your
computer.
PERIPHERAL COMPONENT
INTERCONNECT (PCI)
PCI is a kind of bus that connects the
internal components of a computer. It is
common in modern personal computers.
Commonly used PCI cards are network
cards, sound cards, modems, and those
used for extra ports such as USB, TV tuner
cards, and disk controllers.
PCI EXPRESS
(PCIE)
PCI Express is a point-to-point connection
of serial links designed and introduced by
Intel in 2004 to replace the general-
purpose PCI expansion bus and the AGP
(Accelerated Graphics Port) graphics card
interface.

It is ideal for high-end video cards because

of its faster bandwidth. PCIe 3.0 is the
latest standard for expansion cards that is
widely used in consumer, server, and
industrial applications both as a
motherboard-level and as an expansion
ACCELERATED GRAPHICS
PORT (AGP)
AGP is a port intended for
video card and 3D computer
graphics accelerators. It has
been increasingly phased
out in favor of more
advanced systems, and
eventually replaced by PCI
Express.
PERSONAL COMPUTER
MEMORY CARD
INTERNATIONAL
ASSOCIATION (PCMCIA)
Known simply as a PC Card,
this is a type of bus used on
laptop computers. It was
originally designed for
computer memory expansion
and became the general
standard for notebook
peripherals.
INDUSTRY
STANDARD
ARCHITECTURE
ISA is a bus architecture that
(ISA)
is standard in the IBM AT
motherboard. ISA slots are no
longer included in new
computers, which use PCI,
AGP, and other advanced
buses.
EXTERNAL
UNIVERSAL SERIAL
BUS
USB (USB)
is a standard serial bus
used in interfacing with
devices. It allows peripherals to
be connected and improves
plug-and-play capabilities
through a single standardized
interface socket without the
need to reboot the computer.
FIREWIRE
Also called IEEE 1394 and
i.LINK for Sony, FireWire is a
serial bus interface that
transmits data to and from
high-bandwidth digital
devices faster than the USB.
FireWire can be connected
and disconnected even when
the power is on, which makes
it hot-pluggable.
PERSONAL
SYSTEM/2 (PS/2)
PS/2 connector is used to connect
old models of keyboards and mice
to a computer system. It replaced
the serial and keyboard mouse
connectors. Though they are
almost identical, they differ in the
color indicator. Purple is for
keyboard and green is for mouse.
OTHER COMPONENTS OF A
MOTHERBOARD WITH THE
SYSTEM UNIT/BACK PANEL
With a mere glance at a motherboard,
you can say that it is like a city with
street blocks and highways which we
can easily correlate to the datapath or
functional units, such as the
arithmetic logic unit (ALU) that
performs computing processes. The
data moving through a motherboard
is like passengers on a bus. The
bigger your bus is, the more data you
can transport around.
20-PIN ATX POWER
CONNECTOR
Designed to plug into and
deliver electricity into an ATX-
type computer motherboard,
it transfers power to internal
components, such as the
memory module, hard disk,
CPU, graphics or video card,
and other internal
components.
DRAM MEMORY SLOT
Various types of memory cards can be
installed into these slots.

IDE CONNECTOR
Responsible for connecting the IDE
(Integrated Drive Electronics) cord
used for hard disks, CD drives, and
DVD drives.
Northbridge
An integrated circuit that
specifically connects the
processor, memory, video
card.

Southbridge
Connects all the
peripherals whether it is
connected using USB, ISA,
and PCI connector.
Ethernet
A port that looks much like a
regular phone jack but is slightly
wider. It can be used to connect
your computer to another
computer, a local network, or an
external DSL or cable modem.

Serial Port
A 9-pin serial communication
physical interface in which
information transfers in or out, one
bit at a time.
CPU Socket
A socket specifically for connecting
the computer processor.

CPU Fan & Heatsink Mounting

Points
Slots for CPU fan and heatsink to
make sure the computer doesn’t
get too hot or too cold.
