CONDITIONALS

(IF Sentences)
CONDITIONALS

• A way of organizing words in a sentence.


• Used for a group of sentence structures
that contain the conjunction if.
• Used to talk about a result that may
happen only if a condition happens first.
Two Parts:

• IF-CLAUSE – also called as conditional clause.


- it defines the event or situation
that must happen or must be true.

• MAIN CLAUSE – result clause.


- what happens after the event in
the if-clause occurs.
Sample sentence:

IF Clause

If I am late for school, my teacher gets


angry.
4 Types:

1. Zero Conditional
2. Type 1 Conditional
3. Type 2 Conditional
4. Type 3 Conditional
Zero Conditionals

• These are the things that are real, so it is


also called as real factual conditional.
• Used to talk about habits, scientific facts,
general truths, instructions and rules.
More sample sentences:

1. If you add two and two, you get four.


2. If you touch a fire, you get burned.
3. People die if they don’t eat.
4. You get water if you mix hydrogen and
oxygen.
5. If you feel sad, call me.
Type 1 Conditional

• Possible conditional.
• Used to talk about possible future events and
their likely results.
• To talk about predictions, superstitions, future
plans, warnings, offers and suggestions.

Type 2 Conditional

• Present hypothetical conditional.


• To imagine that the present, right now, is
different than it really is.
• Used to give advice, reasons, or imagine
that your life is different.

• If I lived in a big city, I would go out every
night.
• If I won the lottery, I would buy a big
house.

Type 3 Conditional
• Past unreal conditional
• Used to imagine a different past than the
one that happened.
More sample sentences:
• If she had studied, she would have passed
the exam.
• If we had taken a taxi, we wouldn’t have
missed the plane.
• She wouldn’t have been tired if she had
gone to bed earlier.
• If he had gone to university, he would
have became a teacher.
