Empathy

– An Ambiguous Quality
Definition:
Empathy is the ability of a person to emotionally
understand what other people feel, see things
from their point of view, and imagine yourself in
their place.
• Example Image of Empathy
Types of Empathy:
1. Cognitive Empathy
2. Emotional Empathy
3. Compassionate Empathy
• Simplified Understandable Example for
1. Cognitive Empathy
 CognitiveEmpathy means having more
complete and accurate knowledge about the
contents of another person’s mind, including
how the person feels.
• Example for
Cognitive Empathy

Here is an example of Cognitive Empathy, where a person rationally

listens to what the other person say, to know what the other person is
saying and to advice how to deal with it, without emotionally involving in
his situation.
2. Emotional Empathy
 Emotionalempathy is the practice of sharing an
emotional experience with another person and
truly understanding how they feel.
• Example for

Empathy

This can be taken as an example of Emotional Empathy, where a person

reacts to the other people feelings emotionally. The emotions can be of
fear, love, anxiety, anger, sorrow, etc. This makes the listener to listen with
his/her heart what other people say. This develops connections like
friendship, love, and even vengeance in some cases based on our actions.
3. Compassionate Empathy
 Compassionate empathy is the ability to
understand and share someone else’s emotions,
but without taking them on as your own
emotions or blurring the line between you and
another person.

The above image explains the compassionate empathy where a person

understands other people’s feelings both with heart and mind and reacts to
them emotionally but not as personally as his/her own emotions which
makes it a balanced product of both cognitive and emotional empathy. This
helps the other people feel better and gives us the opposite person’s point of
Example:
Empathy can be explained by many examples. It can be explained by the
emotions like Joy, Anger, Sorrow, Fear and Love. But, one of my most
favorite emotion to take example for EMPATHY is Crime. Crime is one of
the most thrilling genre to discuss about EMPATHY.
If a crime is being committed by a person, it makes them criminal but in
my point of view, they are humans being humane. A crime may be
considered as Crime in many ways, like robbing a bank, killing someone,
degrading a character, etc.
A Crime committed by killing someone(Murder) is considered as one of the
most dangerous crime, which gives a person most terrific Punishments,
when compared to other crimes, since a life of a person is ended. A Crime
is committed mainly due to these specifications like Love, Revenge,
Money, Jealousy, Mental State of a Person, and most dangerously by Fear.
A Person majorly commits a crime in their desperate situations. We cannot
understand those until we put ourselves in their shoes.
When a person kills someone, it may be for the person he/she loves (or) it
can be due to revenge on someone, who previously hurt the person
committing crime or their loved ones (or) it can be due to jealousy on the
other persons (or) due to fear in which a person commits a crime by fearing
that the person got killed will harm the Crime committer or his/her loved
ones in some way (or) due to the unstable state of their mind which
happened after some traumatic event in their lives, or from their genes, or
simply due to some simple normal event in which nothing happened to the
person committing crime or his/her loved ones but even his mind became
unstable(which is a rare case)
We should consider these persons point of view and view these people under
a category of people who is troubled with some mental problems and who

Conclusion:
Empathy is one of the most special ambiguous quality(which
does not have one particular meaning) possessed by a person
that can be defined as the ability of an individual to
understand and feel what somebody else might be feeling.
