Congratulations for completing

Lesson 2!
How to read Ohmmeter
Scale using Analog
VOM
Objectives
• Recognize the parts of Analog VOM that functions when
used as Ohmmeter
• Explain how Ohmmeter scale is read
• Read values on ohmmeter scale
VOM may be used as:

•Ohmmeter – measures resistance

• Milliammeter – measures amperes
• Voltmeter – measures voltage
Analog VOM

This is a Sanwa brand, placement of parts may vary depending on the brand.
Parts to be used as an Ohmmeter
Scale of Analog VOM

Ohmmeter scale –
It has omega sign
Omega sign – indicates ohmmeter scale
Range Selector Switch

Select any of these multipliers only

if using VOM as an Ohmmeter

Omega sign – indicates ohmmeter range

Notice that the ohmmeter scale is reversed (zero is
placed on the right instead of left) compared to
voltage and ammeter scale. The value of the numbers
does not change, only the position changed. The
numbers and lines are not divided equally compared
to ruler.
The major divisions are the lines with numbers written above the scale, which are: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20,
30, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1k, and 2k. Major divisions are grouped according to the distribution of
lines. The lines in each group are divided equally. The major division groups are: 0-2, 2-10, 10-20,
20-50, 50-100, 100-200, 200-500, 500-1k, 1k-2k.
Value of calibration = gap between major divisions ÷ number of lines

For 0-2: gap between major divisions is 2, no. of lines is 10

2 ÷ 10 = 0.2; from 0-2 every line has a value of 0.2

For 2-10: gap between major divisions is 8, no. of lines is 16

8 ÷ 16 = 0.5; from 2-10 every line has a value of 0.5

For 10-20: gap between major divisions is 10, no. of lines is 10

10 ÷ 10 = 1; from 10-20 every line has a value of 1

For 20-50: gap between major divisions is 30, no. of lines is 15

30 ÷ 15 = 2.0; from 20-50 every line has a value of 2.0

For 50-100: gap between major divisions is 50, no. of lines is 10

50 ÷ 10 = 5.0; from 50-100 every line has a value of 5.0
For 100-200: gap between major divisions is 100, no. of lines is 5
100 ÷ 5 = 20; from 100-200 every line has a value of 20

For 200-500: gap between major divisions is 300, no. of lines is 4

300 ÷ 4 = 75; from 200-500 every line has a value of 75

For 500-1k: gap between major divisions is 500, no. of line is 1

500 ÷ 1 = 500; from 500-1k every line has a value of 500

For 1k-2k: gap between major divisions is 1000, no. of line is 1

1000 ÷ 1 = 1000; from 1k-2k every line has a value of
1000
As a summary, look at the figure below for the value of each
line. Note that different brands of VOM have different major
divisions and number of lines. Follow the formula above to know
the value of calibration.
Wherever the pointer stops on the ohmmeter scale, always multiply
the value to where the selector switch is pointing. See the examples
below for reference.

The pointer stops at 70Ω The pointer stops at 70Ω

The selector switch is at x1 The selector switch is at x100

Actual reading = 70Ω x 1 Actual reading = 70Ω x 100
= 70Ω = 7000Ω
Remarks of actual reading:

Good – if actual value is within the maximum

and minimum tolerance
Out of tolerance – if actual value is higher
than maximum tolerance or lower than
minimum tolerance
Open – the pointer did not deflect at all
If you’re ready, take the Assessment 3.

Get at least 8 points to proceed to the next

lesson. If you fail to get 8 points, watch or
read again the lesson and inform your
teacher that you will take again the
assessment. Good luck!
