CELL DIVISION.

17.2 Mitosis.
1. Describe mitosis as nuclear division giving rise to genetically identical cells.
2. State the role of mitosis in growth ,repair of damaged tissues, replacement
of cells and asexual reproduction.
3. State that the exact replication of chromosomes occurs before mitosis.
4. State that during mitosis, the copies of chromosomes separate, maintaining
the chromosome number in each daughter cell.
5. Describe stem cells as unspecialized cells that divide by mitosis to produce
daughter cell sthat can become specialized for specific functions.
Supplement.
2. State that meiosis is involved in the production of gametes.
2. Describe meiosis as a reduction division in which the chromosome number
is halved from diploid to haploid resulting in genetically different cells
MITOSIS
Mitosis is a form of cell division that produces daughter nuclei
containing the same number of chromosomes as the parent nucleus.
The daughter cells are genetically identical.

ROLE OF MITOSIS.
• Mitosis enables the growth of an organism.
• Mitosis is needed for the repair of worn out parts of the body.
e. g healing of the wounds, replacement of cells in the Malpighian
layer.
• Mitosis allows asexual reproduction to occur.
.
At the end of mitosis , two new cells have been formed from one
parent cell. The new cells are sometimes called daughter cells. Each
new cell has a copy of each of the four chromosomes. As the cells grow
they make new copies of each chromosome, ready to divide again.

CLONES.

Genetically identical cells.( same quality and quantity of genetic

material)
STEM CELLS
• Stem cells are unspecialized cells that are able to divide by mitosis to produce
different types of specialized cell.

• A newly formed embryo contains nothing but stem cells.

• In adults most of our cells have become specialized

• Some stem cells still remain in our bodies

• These are important to us, as they are able to divide by mitosis to form other,
specialized cells.
STEM CELLS IN MEDICINE.
• Tissue regeneration: Stem cells can be used to grow a specific tissue
type or organ for transplantation, replacing the need for organ
donors.
• Treating cardiovascular disease: Stem cells can be used to create new
blood vessels, treating people with cardiovascular diseases.
• Treating brain diseases: stem cells can be used to replenish damaged
brain tissues such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
• Blood disease treatment: adult stem cells can be used to treat
diseases such as Leukemia and sickle cell anemia.
MEIOSIS
• Meiosis is a form of nuclear division that produces daughter nuclei
containing half the number of chromosomes as the parent nucleus.

• Meiosis produces haploid gametes.

• Meiosis results in variations in the gametes produced.

• Meiosis only happens in the gamete producing organs. Testes and

ovaries in animals, pollen sacs and the ovules in the ovary of the
plant.
