Introduction

Motivation and Societal Impact:

Parking in urban areas is increasingly challenging, leading to traffic

congestion, wasted time, and environmental pollution. A smart parking lot
system addresses this by monitoring parking spaces in real time, displaying
the availability of empty spots, and providing visual indicators (red for
occupied and green for available). This technology improves efficiency,
reduces emissions, and enhances user convenience, making it a vital
innovation for smart cities.
Introduction

Existing Solutions:
• CCTV Systems:

Use cameras to monitor parking spaces but require significant

storage and complex image processing.
• RFID-Based Systems:

Use RFID tags for vehicle identification but are costly and need
additional hardware on vehicles.
Project Overview

• The Smart Parking Management System is designed to monitor parking

spots in real time, providing accurate information about parking availability.
• It utilizes a combination of ultrasonic sensors, LED indicators, and an
LCD display to detect the presence or absence of vehicles and display spot
status.
• The system is powered by the Arduino Nano, a compact and efficient
microcontroller, ensuring lightweight design and reliable performance.
• Ultrasonic sensors measure the distance to determine whether a spot is
occupied or vacant.
Project Overview

• Red LEDs light up for occupied parking spaces, while green LEDs
indicate vacant spots, providing clear visual feedback to users.
• A 16x2 LCD display (JHD162A) shows the total number of available
parking spots in real time, making it easier for drivers to find open spaces.
• The system's design is highly compact, scalable, and cost-effective,
suitable for both small and large parking lots.
• It offers a modern and user-friendly solution to address urban parking
challenges, enhancing organization, efficiency, and convenience.
Components Used

• Arduino Nano:

Acts as the central controller to process data from sensors and

control the LEDs and LCD.
• HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Sensors:

Used to detect the presence or absence of vehicles by measuring

distances.
Four sensors are used, one for each parking spot.
Components Used

• Red and Green LEDs:

Visual indicators for each parking spot:

– Red LEDs indicate an occupied parking spot.
– Green LEDs indicate an available parking spot.
• LCD Display (JHD162A):

A 16x2 character LCD to display all the number of available

parking spots in real time.
Components Used

• 220Ω Resistors:

Used in series with LEDs to limit current and prevent damage to

the LEDs.
• Jumper Wires:

Connect various components to the Arduino Nano for proper

operation.

Working of the Model

The Smart Parking Management System operates by leveraging ultrasonic

sensors to monitor the occupancy status of parking spots. Each ultrasonic
sensor is positioned above a parking space and continuously measures the
distance to the surface below. If the measured distance is less than a defined
threshold (e.g., 10 cm), the system determines that a vehicle is present,
marking the spot as occupied. This status is visually indicated by a red LED
above the space. Conversely, if the measured distance exceeds the threshold,
the system recognizes the spot as vacant and illuminates a green LED.
Working of the Model

The system is controlled by an Arduino Nano, which processes the data from
the sensors and updates the status of the LEDs accordingly. In addition, a 16x2
LCD display (JHD162A) provides real-time feedback by showing the total
number of available parking spots in the lot. The system works in a loop,
ensuring that parking status is updated continuously and accurately. This real-
time monitoring, combined with clear visual and digital indicators, allows
users to quickly identify vacant spaces and simplifies the overall parking
process.
Hardware Prototype
The hardware prototype includes:
• Four ultrasonic sensors mounted above each parking spot.
• LED indicators placed above the parking spaces.
• An LCD module interfaced with the Arduino to display available parking spots.
• Accuracy:
• The system accurately identified empty and occupied spaces with minimal
latency.
• Visual Indicators:
• The LEDs provided clear, intuitive feedback to drivers.
Future Scope

The Smart Parking Management System can be expanded for larger

parking lots by integrating more sensors and displays, while mobile app
integration can provide real-time parking availability to users for added
convenience. Leveraging IoT and cloud platforms, the system can store
and analyze data for trend prediction and dynamic space management.
Advanced indicators like RGB LEDs or digital displays can enhance user
feedback, and solar-powered operation can improve sustainability. Future
upgrades could include automation with barriers and gates, making the
system more secure and efficient for modern urban infrastructure.
Conclusion

This smart parking lot system uses ultrasonic sensors, LED indicators,
and an LCD display to monitor parking spaces in real time. Ultrasonic
sensors detect whether a spot is occupied, with red LEDs indicating
occupied spaces and green LEDs showing available spots. The LCD
display provides a real-time count of vacant spaces, making it user-
friendly and efficient. Cost-effective and scalable, this solution is ideal for
small to medium-sized parking lots, enhancing parking management with
minimal complexity.
