3. What is the difference between the internet and the
World Wide Web? Write a sentence to explain this
difference.
The internet is a really big network of computers connected together. These
connections allow data to be sent to and from the computers. The World Wide
Web is an example of a resource that we share using the internet. The World
Wide Web is made up of lots of web pages that are linked together.

4. What are some advantages of using the internet?

Find information quickly, Talk to people through messages or video
calls, Watch videos, play games, and listen to music, Shop or pay bills
online, and Learn new things easily.

• Files: Documents, pictures, videos, or homework saved on
Google Drive or a school server.
• Programs: Apps like Google Docs, Microsoft Office 365, or
online games that run from a server.

6. Think about your computer network in school. What

and other devices, Internet connection for browsing and
research, Educational programs or apps for learning, and
Security features like blocking unsafe websites.

7. Describe the difference between a client computer
and a server?
A server is a computer in a network that provides files,
programs and storage that other computers can use. A client is
a device in a network that uses the services a server provides.
A client must be connected to a network to access a server.

8. What services can a server provide to a client?

Let us use services such as films or emails, store large documents and
files such as photos or web pages, and et us use programs such as
word processors or spreadsheets.

In this topic you will:
• explore how Ethernet and wi-fi allow us to connect to
a network

• identify the advantages and disadvantages of using

wired and wireless connections

• explain what happens when a network stops working.

What is the Internet?
• The internet is a big network of computers connected to each
other.
• Data travels between these computers through many
connections.

Page 136
Connections on the Internet
• When you send something on the internet, it travels through
different connections to get to the right place.
• If one path is broken, there are other ways for the data to travel,
just like trains on a railway map!

Page 136
How Does Data Travel?
• Imagine sending data like passengers on a train.
• The stations = Computers
• The tracks = Connections
• The passengers = Data

Page 136
Multiple Ways to Travel
• Look at the picture. There are two ways for data to go from
Computer A to Computer B!
• Just like trains on a map, if one path is blocked, the data can use
another!

Page 136
The Internet is Like a Railway
• Stations = Computers
• Trains = Internet Connections
• Passengers = Data being sent

Page 136
When the Internet is Busy
• Too many people on the internet can slow things down, just like
too many passengers on a train!
• If lots of people use the internet at the same time, the speed
might drop.

Questions
1. What happens if one connection in a network breaks?
If one connection in a network breaks: Some devices may not be able
to communicate, but others may still work.

2. What happens if all the connections in a network break?

If all the connections in a network break: The entire network stops
working, and no devices can communicate.

3. What happens if lots of people try to use the internet at the same time?
•If lots of people use the internet at the same time: The internet may
slow down or become harder to use. Page

Did You Know?
• Some internet connections are really fast!
• Fibre-optic = Very fast!
• Copper cables = Slower!

Page 136
Wired Connections (Ethernet)
• Ethernet is a way for computers to talk to each other using
wires.
Advantages Disadvantages
• Very fast and reliable • Can’t move the
• Harder for hackers to computer
break into • Wires can get messy
• Cheap to set up

Page 136
Wi-Fi Connections
• Wi-Fi lets computers talk to each other without wires!

Advantages Disadvantages
• No need for wires • Slower than wired connections
• Can use the internet while • May not work if you're too far
moving around from the router

Page 136
Stay Safe with Wi-Fi
• Wi-Fi can be less secure than wired connections.
• Make sure your connection is protected with a strong password!

Page 136
Network Security
• Hackers try to steal or damage data.
• Keep your computer safe by using strong passwords and good
security.

Page 136
Wi-Fi and Ethernet Cards
• Wi-Fi and Ethernet cards help your computer connect to the
internet.
• Many computers have these built right in!

Page 136
What Happens if the Network Fails?

• Sometimes networks can break or stop working.

• This means you might lose your work or not be able to access
certain files.

Page 136
What to Do if a Network Fails?
• Save your work often!
• If the internet stops working, check if another connection is
available.

Page 136
Questions
1. What do you think would happen if a small network failed in an office?
People wouldn’t be able to access shared files or printers, and
communication between devices would stop.
2. Imagine that you lost all of your homework because a network failure corrupted
your files. How would you feel?

I would feel upset and frustrated because I worked

hard on it and now I have to redo everything.
