You have heard probably the term “research” during your junior high
school or from s o m e w h o have taken the subject in Senior H ig h School. I
a m pretty sure that this term has petrified you, chilled you out, and made
you anxious. Some of them shared their unforgettable experiences o n this
subject. Nonetheless, y o u cannot deny that somehow you are afraid to
take this chance. However, those are just misconceptions about research
(Kaur 2014). Research is not what you think of.
We c a n say that part of their stories are true a n d part of those are exaggerations.
Nevertheless, if y o u w o u l d just realize h o w e x c iting a n d e n g aging the process of
research is, you would definitely be interested to do it. Research is fun. Here you are
going to explore and to investigate to understand the phenomenon, a n d to establish
n e w knowl e d g e that is worthwhile to discover a n d to share. Re se a rch is easy. It is
just requ i ri n g t o c o m m i t y o u rs e l f a n d to ex ert ex t ra effort i n u n d e r s t a n d i n g t h e

worrying for you’re just a senior high school student, a n amateur, and n ovice w h o

questions. Can w e consider them as a form of informal research? Yes, they are!
Imagine that you are a police inspector assigned to solve a crime. There are
four (4) clues in the crime scene. It is your job to decode the clues using the
alphabet, musical notes, a n d symbols in order to identify w h o is the
culprit. Write your answers o n your notebook.
The misAdventures of Bok and Nonoy
Do you have a similar problem searching about things you don’t know?
I know during that time you were very eager to satisfy your curiosity.
H o w did you come up with the answer? Have you consulted
anybody? O r you switched on your smartphone or c o m p u t e r a n d
search o n the internet? Isn’t f u n to k n o w the a n s w e r s to y o u r
questions? B y doing that, y o u are actually researching. Yo u are
now conducting research! Continue reading this module to

understand h o w this subject differs from other subjects that you have
gone through.
W h a t is It
If y o u think research is not for you , let m e give y o u s o m e instances that
y o u m i g h t have applied “researching”. C a n you still recall w h e n your M a t h teacher- asked

C a n you still recall w h e n you first played your favorite online game, and no matter h o w

y o u r friend or a n expert to help y o u out or y o u se arc he d o n the internet for answers. T he
process that you have done is research. Yo u had a problem, y o u e s t a b l i s h e d y o u r m e t h o d s
o n h o w t o s o l v e y o u r p r o b l e m , y o u c o n d u c t e d a literature review or an actual interview
a n d survey, then you c a me up with solutions. These requires y o u to search a n d to ove rc ome
your problems. Research flows in the s a m e m a n n e r. D o i n g r e s e a r c h d o e s n o t n e c e s s a r i l y
m e a n c r e a t i n g e x t r a o r d i n a r y things like M a r k Zuckerberg w h o developed F a c e b o o k or
e ve n Z h a n g Yi m i n g w h o created TikTok.
Etymologically, research came from “re” and “search”. "Re" is a prefix that
means again and search is a word which m e a n s to look for. Therefore, research
is to look for something (Chapman 1979). There are two (2) things that we need to
take note of in this definition. First, r e s e a r c h is n o t o n l y a b o u t th e d i s c o v e r y
o f s o m e t h i n g u n k n o w n , it is c o m i n g u p w i t h a n e w explanati o n o f s o m e t h i n g
that is k n o w n . Second, research is a process. It is a process of searching for
something to solve an existing problem or difficulty to solve.
Research is also understood as a systematic investigation or inquiry
entailing collection of data, documentation of critical information, analysis,
interpretation of information (Williams 2007). From the given definition, this
highlights the manner h o w research is conducted. It is systematic. T h e question
is, h o w does it becomes systematic and what m a kes it systematic.
T h e te rm systematic entails the structure. To understand the w o r d system, just ima gine you r
body. A r e you r ha nds located in your ears? O r is your nose located o n your chin? O f course,
you will reason out that your h a n d s are located to w h ere it should b e a n d you r nose is
located in the mid dle o f y o u r f a c e . T h e m a n n e r o f h o w y o u r b o d y p a r t s a r e s t r u c t u r e d
a n d o r g a n i z e d implies the system. Research as systematic m e a n s it follows the structure or
method. Therefore, w h e n e v e r collecting data, d oc umen ting information, analyzing, a nd
interpreting information are conducted, a particular m e t h o d is used.

O n the other hand, research c a n b e also v i e w e d as the formation of n e w k n o w l e d g e and the

e mplo yme nt of previous or existing kno w le dge into a n e w and creative w a y (O’Donnell
2012). Imagine these two (2) scenarios: mother giving birth to a baby and a potter molding a
pot. T he creation of n e w knowledge can be compared to a mother giving birth. The mother
stands for the research itself and the baby is new knowledge. Thus, through research, n e w
knowledge is born. O n the other hand, a potter molding a pot can be paralleled to the use of
existing knowledge in a n e w creative way.
Here, the potter stands for the researcher, the clay as the existing knowledge, a n d
the pot itself is a new knowledge made creatively.

N o w, d o not b e afraid to carry out research. It is because y o u c a n m a k e a

research. W h y ? First, it is not n e w to y o u . Yo u are n o t just fully a w a r e that w h a t
y o u w e r e d o i n g is research a n d y o u h a v e b e e n d o in g m a n y times. S e c o n d ,
research is n o t a d e m a n d i n g activity that w o u l d e x h a u s t y o u r strength.
H o w e v e r, s o m e particular techniques a n d processes are involved a n d n e e d e d to
b e carried o u t in c o n d u c ting this activity. W h a t y o u ha ve heard from others is a
piece of h o a x a n d challenges. It is a h o a x for re se arc h is n o t after all difficult. It
is a c h a ll e n g e for y o u that n e e d s dedication a nd commitment to successfully do
this exciting activity.

i m a g i n e a w o r l d without electricity? D o you feel unease if the internet
connection is not stable? Can you imagine if there is no internet or if
there is no cellphone? Well, of course, you will be annoyed, mad, and
worried. Life will be difficult if there is no electricity. Life will be boring
if there is no cellphone or even the internet. Life is threatened if there
will be no cure for C O V I D -19. But thanks to research, all our worries
are gone.
It is because of research which m a d e our lives comfortable, easy, and
secured. Various researches have changed our lives. Here are some leading
outputs of the researches that really changed the world and our perspectives
in lives.
1. Electricity 6. Computer
2. Engines 7. Internet
3. Telephone 8. Vaccines for Viruses
4. Ru b b e r 9. Antibiotics
5. Mo d e rn Education 10. Modern Medicine

For sure life will be miserable. Thus, research is indeed important to us.

The misAdventures of Bok and Nonoy
Think of what you consider most valuable on the things that you have
now? Can you cite five of them? It can be your cellphone, your shirt,

of a long a n d tedious study of different groups or individuals like
what you are doing when you seek for answer. If things that you have
are important a n d these are the product of research, c a n w e say that
research is important to us? ABSOLUTELY YES! RESEARCH IS
IMPORTANT!
W h a t is It
R e s e a rc h is v e r y significant o n o u r lives, it h a s gradually
c h a n g e d h u m a n life through history. Here are the five (5) importance of
research to our daily lives.

1. Research aims for truth (Rolfe 2002).

2. Research improves quality of human life (Bornmann 2013).
3. Research saves life(Cancer Research U K 2019).
4. Research gathers necessary information (Igwenagu 2016).
5. Research explores humanity (Lee, Tran, and Lee 2007).
T he research aims for truth. We crave truth for no one has the desire to live in
lies (Ra sm u sse n 2 0 1 3 ) . Research is about establishing truth ba se d o n evidence or
data. We conduct a study to seek for truth. Just imagine, for m any centuries people
believe that the wo rld is flat a n d it is over the giant turtle. B e y o n d the horizon of
the sea is a n a b y s s . B u t there c a m e F e r d i n a n d M a g e l l a n w h o p r o v e d this
o t h e rw i s e . H i s courage a n d research h a v e m a d e us live with the fact that the
world is round.

Have you ever heard about the belief that earth is the center of the universe?
Actually, fo r m a n y y e a r s m e n b e li e v e d that e v e r y t h i n g r e v o l v e d a r o u n d us. B u t
t h a n k s t o Copernicus, because of his tedious research, n o w w e k n o w that it is not
E arth as the center of the universe but the sun. I beat y o u can cite m o r e e xa mple s
related to this concern. Nonetheless, the main idea here is that research provides us
an explanation or solution to particular proble m b ased o n truth (Kasi 2009).
R e s e a rc h i m p ro v e s t he quality of h u m a n life. I believe that y o u often hear
f r o m y o u r parents a b o u t their e xpe rie nc e s w h e n they w e r e y o u n g . T h o u g h it
s o u n d s s o boring, they live without television, without the internet, without a
cellphone, without a n air condition, without a n electric fan, without c om pute r,
o r online g a m e s . C a n y o u im a g in e that kind of life? B u t lo o k at o u r situation
n o w. Ev e ry th in g that they don’t have before, w e have it now. You can cook
n o w without a fire stove. Now, it is a matter of pushing a button with the use of
a rice cooker or electric stove. Yo u can call a n d s e e y o u r frie nds a b r o a d
w i t h o u t h u stle s t h r o u g h t h e u s e o f social m e d i a platforms. Yo u c a n travel
a n y w h e r e b y just a matter o f hours o r a f e w d a y s u s in g your motorcycles a n d
bikes. Yo u can enjoy staying at h o m e not going outside with the use of your
smartphones.
This is the life w e have n o w . D o you think it just went down from heaven
like rain during the rainy season? All of the technological advancements
are brought by different researches (Gupta 2018). Without the people who
dedicated their lives for the sake of humanity, we will not have this kind of
life. Through research, it improves our standard of living.

Re s e a rc h saves a life. T h ro u g h the course of h u m a n history, research has

proven its worth and roles in our lives. In the past, wh e n penicillin w a s not
yet discovered, people just die without proper medication. It was by the
research of Fleming that the first ge nerat i on o f antibiotics w e r e d i sc o v e re d
( P a n d e y et al. 2 0 1 4 ) . In the s a m e manner, h o w can w e forget the research
of Dr. Abelardo Aguilar, a Filipino doctor, one of the contributors to the
discovery of Erythromycin during the late 1940s? Now,
w e h a v e effective m e d i c i n e in bacteria that caus es infections in the respiratory tract (Peretti et
al. 2011).

M or eover, Dr. F e D e l M u n d o i m p r o v e d the incubator a n d jaundice relieving device. N o w pre-

matured babies and those suffering f r om jaundice can survive and enjoy life in the future. Wi t h
o ur situation n o w w i t h the th reat of C O V I D 19, the onl y h o p e is r e s e a r c h . R e s e a r c h o n
understanding the disease, development of vaccines, a n d m e d i c a t i o n wi l l s a v e us.

for this p a n d e m i c . Later, r es ear ch will s u c c e e d and will continue to provide u s a safer life.

Research gathers the necessary information. Conducting research implies gathering

Another, w h e n C O V I D 1 9 w a s just starting to spread, medical experts are puzzled

o n the m a n n e r t h e virus is transmitted, possible medication, wa ys to prevent it,
incubation period, a n d location affected b y the pa nd emic. Thus, the necessary
information to understand the situation w a s gathered.
Research explores humanity. Do you know that Bataeños have
developed distinct Tagalog intonation and words? Do you know that the
song “Ati Ku Pung Singsing” is about the culture of the K a p a mp a n g a n ?
D o you k n o w that in Zambales, the Aetas have customary maternal and
infant care beliefs based o n their tradition and faith passed through
generations? D o you k n o w that the Dumagat of Aurora considered prayers
as part of their economic life? Do you know that the province of Tarlac
came f r o m the "Malatarlak"? I a m quite sure that y o u are familiar w i t h
s o m e of these questions. These are just examples of h o w research
explores the culture of people.

explanations about group or individual culture. Because of this, w e can n o w related,
understand, a n d respect others.
