Descriptive Paragraph
Descriptive Paragraph
A descriptive paragraph provides a vibrant experience for the reader
through vivid language and descriptions of something. Descriptive
paragraphs must focus on vividly and objectively describing something
to the reader.
 Use language which appeals to the reader’s five senses
 Use descriptive language, usually in the form of adjectives
 Must show and not tell the reader
 Reason for writing the paragraph
 How and why something is significant rather than simply telling the reader
 Writer helps the reader to picture what is being described
Descriptive Paragraph

Sentence 1: The tree was tall and green.

Sentence 2: The soft and damp pink flowers of the dogwood tree
smelled sweet in the cool spring air as the wind whistled through its
yellow-green leaves.

Description about a Person

 Start your paragraph with a general topic sentence that introduces the person
 Focus on the most striking part of their appearance first
 Focus on physical details that hint at the person’s personality
 Fill in any last details to give a good general picture
 Use figurative language and strong adjectives throughout your paragraph
 End the paragraph with a resonant description or conclusion
Description about a Person

Example:
 Mary is as beautiful as a Hollywood star. Her thick, wavy, long black hair gracefully falls down to her
shoulders and encircles her diamond-shaped face. A golden suntan usually brings out her smooth, clear
complexion and high cheek bones. Her slightly arched chestnut brown eyebrows highlight her emotions
by moving up and down as she reacts to her world around her. Her large deep blue eyes, remind me of a
lake on a stormy day. Her curved nose gives her a little girl look that makes me want to smile when she
talks. And her mouth is a small mouth outlined by puffy lips that she often accentuates with glossy pink
lipstick. When she smiles, which is often, her well formed and even, white teeth brighten up her whole
face. I guess you can tell that I am head over heals in love with Mary.
Description about a Place

 Start by describing the first thing that strikes you about the place
 Highlight small place details to make your description interesting
 Use surprising, exotic language to make the place come to life
 Add sensory details to appeal to your sense of scent, touch, and sound
 Write about how you or your character react to the place
 Include only the most important details so you don’t bog your reader down
Examples of Description about a Place
 Reaching for the bedside lamp, she stopped and withdrew her hand. The photograph of her
father had been turned out to face the room. She touched it every night before she went to
sleep. It was always facing towards her, towards the bed, not away from it. … In the darkness,
what had felt safe before now felt frightening: the way the dressing-table mirror reflected the
street-light through the curtains and the sight of the wardrobe door left slightly ajar.

 It was still early in the evening when we emerged onto a street in Tsukiji, near the fish market.
… Wooden bait-and-tackle shops with disintegrating roofs and broken signs stood next to shiny
new convenience stores, and futuristic highrise apartment complexes rose skyward on either
side of narrow, retro streets lined with wholesalers of dried fish.
Description about an Object

 Give an idea of the size and general shape of the object

 Describe its sensory details, like color, texture, or taste
 Talk about what it’s used for to give a sense of its purpose
 End by telling or showing how the object is significant, depending on your tone
Examples of Description about an Object
 High above the city, on a tall column, stood the statue of the Happy Prince. He was gilded all
over with thin leaves of fine gold, for eyes he had two bright sapphires, and a large red ruby
glowed on his sword-hilt.

Description of a Pen:
 Long, slender and sleek, you give me the power of words. Your round, agile head rolling gently
along the rough-textured paper spilling your glorious, black blood as you skate across the blank
document. The lights of the heavens rain down upon you; your glowing radiance is blinding.
Mine eyes can hardly follow. Your smell fills my heart with gladness. You are my one and only;
it is up to you to get me through this paper. If you were to die, you would take me with you.
Describe this landscape with your creative & sensational words!
