1. Self-Immolation of a
Buddhism Monk
Thích Quang Duc wasin
a Vietnam
Vietnamese
Mahayana Buddhist monk who
immolated himself on 11 June 1963.
He was protesting against the
persecution of Buddhists by the
South Vietnamese government led
by Ngo Dinh Diem. The immolation
was considered to be an act of
defiance against a corrupt
govemment.
2. Widow Burning Among the
Hindus in China
Sati, a 700-year-old Indian
practice of self-immolation of a
widow on her husband’s funeral
pyre, originated among the
ruling Rajput class. Outlawed by
British rulers in 1829, rare cases
still occur today.
3. The Inquisition
The Inquisition, a response to
popular movements like
Catharism and Waldensians in
southern France and Italy, was a
Roman Catholic Church group
charged with subduing heresy
around 1184.
4. The Godhra Train Incident
in 2002
In 2002, a train fire in Gujarat killed
59 people, mostly Hindu pilgrims
and activists. The incident was
investigated by a commission,
which concluded it was a mob of
1000-2000 people. Thirty-one
Muslims were convicted for the
incident and conspiracy.
