Active and Passive
Voice
WHAT IS VOICE IN GRAMMAR?
 In grammar, the voice of a verb describes the
relationship between the action (or state) that the verb
expresses and the participants identified by its
arguments (subject, object, etc.).
 When the subject is the agent or doer of the action, the
verb is in the active voice.
 When the subject is the target, undergoer or the
receiver of the action, the verb is said to be in the
passive voice.
What Is the Active Voice?
If the subject is performing the action, then the verb is
said to be in the active voice.
Look at this:
What Is the Passive Voice?
If the subject is having the action done to it, then the verb
is said to be in the passive voice.

Active Voice
Active voice is used to show that the
subject of the sentence is performing or
causing the action.

Example:
• The player threw the basketball before
the buzzer.
• The students were making a lot of
noise.
• I will score good marks.
Passive Voice
Passive voice is used when the subject
is the recipient of the action.

Example:
• The basketball was thrown by the
player before the buzzer.
• A lot of noise was being made by
the students.
• Good marks will be scored by me.
ACTIVE VOICE: Why does it
matter?

 Strong writing uses Active Voice

 Active voice is more direct and concise.
 Passive voice is usually verbose.
When would you WANT to use
passive voice?
 When intentionally trying to hide the subject of the
sentence.
• For example, “The mistake was made by someone.”
Hiding the subject helps him/her hide the blame.

 When intentionally trying to minimize the guilt of the

subject.

 When passive voice better emphasizes the main point

of the message, such as “Children were harmed by the
irresponsible driver.”
NOTEBOOK WORK – HANDOUT Ex - 1

ACTIVE PASSIVE VOICE

SESSION-2
LET’S RECAPITULATE
TRANSITIVE AND INTRANSITIVE VERBS

 LET’S WATCH A VIDEO

TRANSITIVE –INTRANSITIVE VERBS AND
THE PASSIVE VOICE
 Any sentence of which the predicate
is a transitive verb followed by an
object may be changed from the
active to the passive form without
affecting the sense.

Active : Richard shot the bear.

Passive : The bear was shot by
Richard.
TRANSITIVE –INTRANSITIVE
VERBS AND THE PASSIVE VOICE
 Bear, the object of the active verb shot, becomes
the subject of the passive verb was shot.

 Richard, the subject of the active verb shot,

becomes by Richard, an adverbial phrase,
modifying the passive verb ‘was shot.’

Thus we have the rule….

The object of the active verb becomes the subject

of the passive.
TRANSITIVE –INTRANSITIVE
VERBS AND THE PASSIVE VOICE

Intransitive verbs are ordinarily

used in the active voice only.

1. The bystanders laughed.

2. The watchdogs bark.
3. Snow is falling.
TRANSITIVE –INTRANSITIVE
VERBS AND THE PASSIVE VOICE
 An intransitive verb followed by a preposition is often
used in the passive, the object of the preposition becoming
the subject of the verb.

Active Voice…….Passive Voice

1. Everybody laughed at him. …….He was laughed at by

everybody.

2. The attorney general has not yet passed upon this bill.
…….This bill has not yet been passed upon.

3. He has tampered with this lock. …….This lock has been

tampered with.

4. The cart ran over me. …….I was run over by the cart.
Form of Passive Voice Verbs
 The passive voice requires a "double verb"
and will always consist of a form of the
verb "to be" and the past participle
(usually the "en/ed/t" form) of another
verb.
 Example:
Active: John baked the bread.
Passive: The bread was baked by
John. (Was is a form of the verb
“be”.)
Form of Passive Voice Verbs

 Writers should be familiar with the

forms of "to be" , often called linking
verbs, so that they can easily identify
the passive voice in their work.

 Review the forms of "to be":

 am, is, are, was, were, be,
being, been
Form of Passive Voice Verbs

 Passive: The cookies were eaten by
the children.
 Active: The children ate the
