• Impact echo is a method for nondestructive evaluation of concrete

and masonry. It is based on the use of impact-generated compression

waves that travel through the structure and are reflected by internal
flaws and external surfaces. Impact Echo can be used to measure the
thickness of slabs, plates, columns and beams, hollow cylinders. It can
also be used to determine the location and extent of flaws such as
cracks, delamination's, voids, honeycombing and debonding in plain,
reinforced and post tensioned concrete structures. Voids in subgrade
directly beneath slabs and pavements are easily detected through

structure and are reflected by internal flaws system
and external surfaces. Impact Echo can be

also be used to determine the location and Impact
extent of flaws such as cracks, delamination's,
voids, honeycombing and debonding in plain,

structures. Voids in subgrade directly beneath
slabs and pavements are easily detected
through Impact Echo testing
Objective
• Impact echo testing has a focused objective,(with focus on impact-
generated stress wave for use in non-destructive evaluation in concrete
and masonry), such as locating cracks, voids or delaminations,
determining the thickness of concrete slabs, or checking a post-tensioned
structure for voids in grouted tendon ducts.
• Used most successfully to identify and quantify suspected problems within
structure, in quality control applications, such as measuring thickness of
new highway pavements, and in preventive maintenance programs, such
as routine evaluation of bridge decks to detect delamination.
• Purpose is to provide a single, comprehensive information, to make full
authoritative use of its capability.
History
Procedure
• Impact Echo testing consists of both time record
and frequency spectrum, associated with
mechanical impact on the surface of structure. As
stress waves propagates through the structure,
they reflect off external and internal boundaries
and causes the periodical displacement on the
surface.
• This motion are monitored by transducer and
digitized. The waveform are transformed into
frequency domains, so that periodicity of stress
wave arrivals can be accurately determined.
• As a part of direct measurement, P
wave(compression wave) velocity can be made .
So. By given P wave velocity, and arrival period(or
frequency) the depth of internal and external
boundaries can be calculated.
• Impact echo method offers significant advantage. It is nondestructive and
requires only one surface to be exposed. Because of the speed of impact
echo measurement, a larger area can be tested at greater resolution and
lower cost than invasive methods.
• Impact Echo testing has many applications, including:
1. Quality control programs, such as measuring pavement thickness or assessing pile
intrigrity.
2. Routine maintenance evaluation to detect cracks, voids or delaminations in concrete
slabs.
3. Delineate areas of damage and corrosion in walls, canals and other concrete structure.
4. Assess quality of bonding and condition of tunnel liners.
