MODALITY
• relates to the status of the proposition (how likely is it?)

• Modal verbs convey modality (modality markers)

The speaker’s attitute (modality) can be:
1. Epistemic - possibility (degree of certainty or possibility;
expresses the speaker’s opinion about the truth of a proposition)

• You must be joking.

2. Deontic - ethics/authority (degree of willingness or freedom to


act; concerned with the freedom to act – obligation, permission,
offering, requesting...)

• Students must pass an entrance examination to study at this


school.
