INTRODUCTION
What is Industrial Automation?
Industrial automation is a set of technologies that uses control
systems and devices, such as computer software and robotics, to
enable automatic operation of industrial processes and machinery
without the need for human operators
GMR Institute of Technology

Industrial Automation uses SCADA, HMI, and PLC refers to a system where a
Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) handles the low-level control of machinery, while a
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system monitors and controls the
overall process, with a Human Machine Interface (HMI) providing a user-friendly
interface for operators to interact with the system and view real-time data
METHODOLOGY
Industrial automation systems use sensors, automatic control devices, computer
technology and software engineering to simply and manage these tasks. Data is collected
through thousands of sensors at different locations throughout the facility; the
information is stored and analyzed on a computer.

For Industrial Automation we use some softwares like:-

GMR Institute of Technology

Seimens TIA PORTAL for PLC ,HMI And WINCC FOR SCADA

TIA PORTAL:- TIA Portal is the Siemens engineering framework for all automation tasks in
manufacturing automation.

WINCC:- SIMATIC WinCC is a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system
from Siemens that allows users to monitor and control industrial and infrastructure
processes

PLC (programmable logic controller)
Programmable logic controller (PLC) is a computer that controls and monitors industrial
equipment using custom programs

TYPES OF PLC :-
1)SIMATIC S7-1200
2)SIMATIC S7-1500
GMR Institute of Technology

3)SIMATIC S7-300 etc.....

In our industry we mainly use SIMATIC S7-1200

SIMATIC S7-1200 Basic Controllers are the ideal choice when it comes to flexibly and
efficiently performing automation tasks in the lower to medium performance range. They
feature a comprehensive range of technological functions and integrated IOs as well as an
especially compact and space-saving design.
HMI(Human Machine Interface)
HMI stands for Human-Machine Interface. It refers to the interaction between
a human and a machine or system. HMIs are used in a variety of fields, from
industrial applications to consumer electronics, and they are designed to
make it easier for humans to control, monitor, and interact with machines,
devices, or systems.
GMR Institute of Technology

TYPES OF HMI:-
1)Industrial HMI
2)Consumer HMI

In our industry we mainly use WINCC(Windows Control Center)

WINCC stands for Windows Control Center, it is a software product developed by

Siemens for Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition (SCADA) systems. It is used for monitoring, controlling, and visualizing
industrial processes, such as those found in manufacturing plants, production lines,
and other automation environments.

6
SCADA
SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. It is a system used to
monitor and control industrial processes, infrastructure, and facilities. SCADA systems
are commonly used in industries such as manufacturing, energy, water treatment, oil
and gas, and utilities, where centralized control and monitoring of complex processes are
critical.

TYPES OF SCADA:-
1)Networked SCADA
2)Distributed SCADA
3)Cloud-Based SCADA

Traffic lights using plc (Project)
A Traffic
. Light Control System using PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) is a common
project in industrial automation and control. The goal of this project is to design a
system where traffic lights can be controlled automatically to manage the flow of
traffic based on a specific timing sequence or conditions. The PLC can be programmed
to control the switching of traffic light signals (red, yellow, green) at an intersection in a
systematic way.
GMR Institute of Technology

Key Components of a Traffic Light Control System using PLC:

PLC (Programmable Logic Controller): The heart of the system, responsible for logic
and control. It will be programmed to manage the timing of the traffic lights.
Traffic Lights (Red, Yellow, Green): These are connected to the PLC outputs, where each
light is controlled based on the PLC's logic.
Input Devices:
Sensors: Can be used to detect vehicles (such as inductive loops or infrared sensors) at
the intersection to manage traffic light timing dynamically.
Manual Switches: In some cases, manual push-button switches can be used to simulate
requests for crossing (e.g., pedestrian crossings).
Output Devices:
Traffic Light Indicators: Typically LED or incandescent bulbs that turn on for red, yellow,
or green.
Timers: Used to control the duration of each light’s state (e.g., how long the green light
stays on).
CONCLUSION
The Traffic Light Control System using PLC project demonstrates how PLCs can
automate everyday systems for safety, efficiency, and reliability. By integrating
timers, inputs from sensors or manual switches, and controlling the outputs (traffic
lights), a well-designed PLC-based traffic control system can manage complex traffic
patterns and adapt to varying conditions.
