CHAPTER 2
PLC HARDWARE
CLO 1. Apply the concept and principles of PLC using in automation system
( C3, PLO1 )

At the end of this chapter student should be able to explain the basic
components of the PLC.
 Explain the functions as well as the operation of PLC block
diagram that shows:
 Central Processing Unit (CPU)
 Memory Unit
 Display and Indicator Unit
 Input Unit
 Output Unit
 Explain the functions and operations of the following hardware
units:
 Housing Unit
 Programming Unit
 Program Loader Unit
 Secondary Storage Unit
 VDU Unit
 Power Supply Unit
 Printer Unit NORSILAWATI BINTI JAMINAM_JKM_PMS
 Identify input devices.
BASIC COMPONENTS OF
THE PLC
 Processor unit
 The processor unit or central processing unit (CPU) is the unit containing the
microprocessor and this interprets the input signals and carries out the control
actions, according to the program stored in its memory, communicating decisions as
an action signals to the output.
 Memory unit
 Program is stored in memory unit, and is used for the control actions to be exercised
by the microprocessor. Random Access Memory (RAM) is used to read/ write memory.
It will be lost when the power supply disconnected. Read Only Memory (ROM) is read-
only memory type and special equipment is used to delete this type of memory.
 Input unit
 Input unit is a module that connects and carry signal from input devices to the PLC.
 Output unit
 Output unit is a module that connects and send signal from PLC to output devices
(actuator).
 Display /indicator unit
 Display and indicator unit refers to the internal relay status display PLC. This can be
seen in the Console programming if the user using the mnemonic code and
programming computer screen if the user using software programming.

PLC OPERATION
 Input Scan – Scan the state of the Inputs
 Program Scan – Processes the program
logic
 Output Scan – Energize/de-energize the
outputs
 Housekeeping – This step includes
communications, Internal Diagnostics,
etc.

HARDWARE UNIT
 Housing Unit
 This unit provides protection to the circuit and

components to PLC internal components.

 Programming Unit
 Computer (software) is the commonly used

programming device. The software allows user to

create, edit, document, store and troubleshoot
programs. PC communicates with PLC via serial or
parallel data communications link Program Loader
Unit. Programming Console usually used to
program small PLC. They are compact,
inexpensive and easy to use but are not able to
display much logic on screen as computer monitor.

 Program Loader Unit
 The control engineer (user) enters the control

program on the program loader. The program

loader writes the program into the memory.
 Secondary Storage Unit
 This unit is link to the Centre Processing Unit,

where all programs and information are stored.

 VDU Unit
 VDU unit is to processing operations and

system status information to be displayed by

the PLC

 Power Supply Unit
 Provide a supply voltage to CPU, Input and

Output Unit to run the PLC.

 Printer Unit
 This unit is used to print a control system

program that will control by PLC either in

graphical or text.
