CHAPTER 2
PLC HARDWARE
CLO 1. Apply the concept and principles of PLC using in automation system
( C3, PLO1 )
At the end of this chapter student should be able to explain the basic
components of the PLC.
Explain the functions as well as the operation of PLC block
diagram that shows:
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Memory Unit
Display and Indicator Unit
Input Unit
Output Unit
Explain the functions and operations of the following hardware
units:
Housing Unit
Programming Unit
Program Loader Unit
Secondary Storage Unit
VDU Unit
Power Supply Unit
Printer Unit NORSILAWATI BINTI JAMINAM_JKM_PMS
Identify input devices.
BASIC COMPONENTS OF
THE PLC
Processor unit
The processor unit or central processing unit (CPU) is the unit containing the
microprocessor and this interprets the input signals and carries out the control
actions, according to the program stored in its memory, communicating decisions as
an action signals to the output.
Memory unit
Program is stored in memory unit, and is used for the control actions to be exercised
by the microprocessor. Random Access Memory (RAM) is used to read/ write memory.
It will be lost when the power supply disconnected. Read Only Memory (ROM) is read-
only memory type and special equipment is used to delete this type of memory.
Input unit
Input unit is a module that connects and carry signal from input devices to the PLC.
Output unit
Output unit is a module that connects and send signal from PLC to output devices
(actuator).
Display /indicator unit
Display and indicator unit refers to the internal relay status display PLC. This can be
seen in the Console programming if the user using the mnemonic code and
programming computer screen if the user using software programming.
