Dividing Decimals by Decimals

Introduction to Decimal
Division

● Dividing decimals can seem tricky

● We'll learn how to do it step-by-step
● You'll be a decimal division expert in
no time!
The Key Question

● Before starting, always ask yourself:

● Is the divisor (the number outside) a whole number?
● This determines our next steps
● Why do you think this question is important?
When the Divisor is
Not Whole
● If the divisor is not a whole number, we
need to change it
● We'll multiply both the divisor and dividend
by a power of 10
● This moves the decimal point to make the
divisor whole
Example 1: Setup

● Let's look at our first example: 5.76 ÷ 0.3

● 5.76 is our dividend (goes inside)
● 0.3 is our divisor (goes outside)
● Is 0.3 a whole number?
Making the Divisor
Whole

● We need to make 0.3 a whole number

● Multiply both numbers by 10
● 0.3 becomes 3
● 5.76 becomes 57.6
● Our new problem: 57.6 ÷ 3
Division Process

● Now we can divide as usual

● Bring the decimal point straight up
● Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down
● Repeat until finished

Common Mistakes to Avoid
● Forgetting to change the dividend when changing the divisor
● Stopping division too early
● Misplacing the decimal point in the answer
● Have you made any of these mistakes before?
