DIFFERENT TYPES
OF SOFTWARES
DISCUSSANT: JHAN ARVIN RAMOS
OBJECTIVES

AT THE END OF THIS

LESSON STUDENTS
WILL LEARN THE
DIFFERENT TYPES OF
SOFTWARES AND
THEIR FUNCTIONS.
INTRODUCTION

Computer software are all applications that can be run on a computer.

They are basically the instructions that tell the hardware of a computer
what to do. Software describes all computer programs, so non-physical
elements important for the functioning of a computer that cannot be
touched. Software can be considered as a set of instructions that tell the
computer’s hardware how to behave.
INTRODUCTION

Software consists of computer programs

that instruct the execution of a computer.
Software can be defined broadly to
include design documents, specifications,
and testing suites.
APPLICATION SOFTWARES
An application program (app or
application for short) is a computer
program designed to perform a
group of coordinated functions,
tasks, or activities for the benefit of
the user.
APPLICATION SOFTWARES
Examples of an application include a word processor, a
spreadsheet, an accounting application, MS office, a web
browser - Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, a media player, an
aeronautical flight simulator, a console game or a photo
editor – Photoshop.

OPERATING SYSTEMS
An operating system (OS) is system
software that manages computer hardware
and software resources and provides
common services for computer programs. All
computer programs, excluding firmware,
require an operating system to function.
Operating Systems
Examples of operating systems are DOS
(Disk Operating System), Windows,
Linux, Macintosh, etc.

PEOPLEWARE
Computer programmers typically do the
following:
 Write programs in a variety of computer
languages, such as C++ and Java
 Update and expand existing programs
 Debug programs by testing for and fixing errors
 Build and use computer-assisted software
engineering (CASE) tools to automate the writing
of some code
 Use code libraries, which are collections of
independent lines of code, to simplify the writing.
A user is a person who uses a computer or network
service. Users generally use a system or a software
product without the technical expertise required to fully
understand it. Power users use advanced features of
programs, though they are not necessarily capable of
computer programming and system administration.
All the latest and greatest computer hardware in
the world is useless if there isn’t any software to
interpret it. Software is there to utilize hardware:
from making sure that it runs efficiently, to
providing people with the latest functionality
upgrades. Even older hardware benefits from
improved software support, namely driver
upgrades.
