Recall one of your output yesterday. Consider
this one. How would you describe the image
formed here?
1
1.The image formed is:
K ind: ______ (formed on
the other side of the
lens)
2f F F S ize: __________
Position: _______(in
reverse position of the
object)

2.The image formed is:

Kind: ___________
o
(formed on the same
side of the lens) 2f F i F
Size: ____________
Position: _________the
same position of the
object)
See this… did you get it right?

1
1.The image formed is:
K ind: real (formed on
the other side of the
lens)
2f F F S ize: smaller in size
Position: inverted (in
reverse position of the
object)

2.The image formed is:

Kind: virtual (formed
o
on the same side of the
lens) 2f F i F
Size: smaller in size
Position: upright(the
same position of the
object)
In the previous slide, you can tell easily
the quality of the image formed and its
location using the graphical method.

 Isit possible for us to quantify the

exact size or height of the object and
height of the image on lenses?
 How about the distance of object and
distance of image from the lens?
 How is it possible?
The Lens formulae could also be used
to determine the nature, position, and
size of the image in lenses.

Where: 1 1 1
Do = object
 
Do Di f
distance
Di = image Hi Di
M  
distance Ho Do
Hi =image height
Ho= object height
f= focal length
Note M = Magnification
oIf M is negative, the image is inverted, otherwise erect
oIf Di is negative, the image is virtual, otherwise real
oConcave lens have negative f while convex have positive f.
This is a real challenge. Let us see whether you
Example 1. can hurdle it….
Adrian stands 3m in front of a
convex lens whose focal length is 1.5m. Where
is his imaged formed? How would you describe
his image? How far is the image from the lens.
If he is 1.5m tall, how tall is his image

What do we have in the
problem?
 Given:
Solutions:
Ho = 1.5 m
f = 1.5
m
Do = 3.0 m 1 1 1
 
Do Di f
Find : Hi Di
M  
a. Di Ho Do
h. Hi
Let us solve for the
unknown:
b. Hi/Ho = -Di/Do
Hi = Ho(-Di)/Do
Hi = 1.5 m (- 3.0 m)/3
a. 1/f = 1/do + 1/di m
1/di = 1/f – 1/do Hi = - 4.5 m²/3 m
1/di = 1/1.5 m – Hi = - 1.5 m
1/3 m
D. The image formed is
1/di = 2/3 – 1/3
located at 2f, real, the
1/di = 1/3 m
same height of object
Di = 3.0 m and upside down.
Consider the second sample
below:
A 10.0 cm candle is located 15 cm in
front of a concave lens whose radius
of curvature is 10.0 cm.
a. What is the focal length of the lens?
b. How far will be the image formed
from the lens?
c. How tall is the image?
d. Describe the image.
What do we have in the
problem?
 Given:
Solutions:
Ho = 10.0
cm
r = 10.0 a. f = 1r
cm 1 1 1
 
Do = 15 cm Do Di f
Find : Hi Di
M  
a.f Ho Do
a.Di
b.Hi
Let us solve for the
unknown:
C. Hi/Ho = -Di/Do
A. f = r Hi = Ho(-Di)/Do
f = ( 10.0 cm ) Hi = 10 cm(-) (-6 cm)/15
f = 10 .0 cm
cm
B. 1/f = 1/do + 1/di
Hi = 60 cm²/15 cm
1/di = 1/-f – 1/do Hi = 4 cm
1/di = 1/-10 cm –
1/15 cm D. The image formed is
1/di = -3/30 – 2/30 located b/w F and lens,
1/di =- 5/30 cm virtual, 2/5 of the object
Di = - 6 cm and erect.
Evaluation : Consider the problems
below: Answer these in 1 graphing paper.

in front of a concave lens whose
radius of curvature is 10 cm.
a. What is the focal length of the lens?
b. How far will be the image formed
from the lens?
c. How tall is the image?
d. Describe the image.
2. A 12.0 cm candle is located 8
cm in front of a convex lens whose
radius of curvature is 16 cm.

a. What is the focal length of the lens?

b. How far will be the image formed
from the lens?
c. How tall is the image?
3. Solve This is a real challenge. Let us see whether you
can hurdle it….
