Positioning a Baby at the Breast

o At the completion of this module the


participants will be able to:
o Explain the 4 key points of positioning
o Describe how a mother should support
her breast for feeding
Objectives o Demonstrate the main positions – sitting,
lying, underarm and across
o Help a mother to position her baby at the
breast, using the 4 key points in different
positions
Possible in all mothers who have had:
o A vaginal delivery
Initiation of
o A caesarean section delivery under
Breastfeeding spinal anaesthesia
within ½ - 1 o An episiotomy
hour o A forceps delivery
o A vacuum extraction
Initiation of Breastfeeding on the Delivery Table

o Aids in expulsion of placenta


o Prevents postpartum haemorrhage
o Stimulates milk let-down
o Encourages mother to feed colostrum and avoid excessive prelacteal feeds
o Promotes emotional bonding
o Prevents serious infections in the neonatal period
