Definitions
Determinate structures are those in which the
internal forces and reactions can be determined
using only the equations of equilibrium.

Indeterminate structures, on the other hand,

require additional analysis methods to determine
internal forces and reactions, i.e. they cannot be
fully analysed using only the equations of
equilibrium.

Degree of Indeterminacy: The degree of

indeterminacy of a structure is a measure of how
much more information is needed to analyze the
structure beyond the equations of equilibrium. A
higher degree of indeterminacy means a more
complex and challenging analysis.
Definitions (contd.)
Equations of Equilibrium: These are the
equations that state that the sum of forces and
moments acting on a structure must be zero.

Truss: A truss is composed of slender members

joined together at their end points. (usually joined
by welds or gusset plates). The beams are usually
arranged in a repeated triangular pattern, since a
triangle cannot be distorted by stress.

Boundary conditions refer to the constraints or

supports that are applied to a structure to render
it statically determinate. Boundary conditions are
essential in achieving static determinacy by
restricting the possible movements of a structure.

Understanding Determinate Structures
Characteristics

Determinate structures have a predictable and well-defined internal force

distribution. They are stable and can be analyzed using basic statics.

Examples of Determinate Structures

Some examples include simply supported beams, trusses, and frames with
fixed supports.

Analysis Methods for Determinate Structures

Methods such as the method of joints, method of sections, and virtual work
can be used to determine internal forces and reactions.
Understanding Indeterminate Structures
Characteristics

Indeterminate structures have multiple possible internal force distributions.

They are not fully stable and require advanced analysis methods.

Examples of Indeterminate Structures

Some examples include continuous beams, arches, and frames with hinges.

Analysis Methods for Indeterminate Structures

Methods such as the method of consistent deformations, slope deflection

method, and moment distribution method are used to analyze indeterminate
structures.

Methods of Analyzing Indeterminate
1 Method of Consistent Deformations

This method treats the deformation of the structure as unknowns

and solves for them using compatibility and equilibrium equations.

2 Slope Deflection Method

The slope deflection method analyzes the deflection and rotation at

each point of the structure to determine internal forces and
reactions.

3 Moment Distribution Method

In this method, moments are distributed throughout the structure to

achieve equilibrium, allowing for the determination of internal forces
and reactions.
Advantages & Disadvantages of
Determinate Structures
Advantages
 Simplicity in analysis: Easier to determine internal forces and

reactions.

 Predictability: Reliable and well-understood behavior.

 Cost-effective: Require less material and construction time.

Disadvantages

 Limited span length: Cannot span large distances without additional

support.

 Restrictions on design: Less architectural freedom.

 Less efficient use of materials: May require larger sections and more
Advantages & Disadvantages of
Indeterminate Structures
Advantages
 Architectural flexibility: Allows for unique and aesthetically pleasing designs.

 Increased load-carrying capacity: Can support heavier loads compared to

determinate structures.

 Redundancy: Can redistribute loads and withstand failures.

Disadvantages
 Increased risk of errors: Greater potential for design and construction

mistakes.

 Higher construction costs: More materials and labor required.

 Complex analysis: Requires more advanced engineering calculations.

Importance of Understanding
Determinate and Indeterminate
Structures
Design Optimization

Understanding whether a structure is determinate or indeterminate helps optimize

the design, ensuring structural efficiency and economy.

Load Distribution

By analyzing determinate and indeterminate structures, engineers can determine

how loads are distributed and ensure safe weight distribution.

Structural Analysis

Knowledge of determinate and indeterminate structures enables accurate structural

analysis, allowing for the prediction of deformations and structural behavior.
Which of the following structures cannot be
determined using ONLY the equations of
equilibrium?
Simply supported beams
Trusses
A.Arches
B.Frames with fixed supports

Correct answer: C
Determine if the structure below is
statically determinate or not? (Remember:
b+r=2j)

The structure is statically determinate.

b = 11, j = 7, r = 3
b+r=2j
11+3=(2*7)
