INTRODUCTION TO THE

ENGINEERING PROFESSION
CPEDIS 101
DEFINITION

• Computer Engineering is a discipline that uses principles from Computer

Science and Electrical Engineering to create hardware (physical
components) and firmware that are used in a wide range of areas:
consumer electronics, medical devices, communication systems, aircraft,
self-driving cars, etc.
• Computer Engineering students learn how to develop, prototype, and
test microchips, circuits, processors, conductors, and other components
used in computer devices or systems (e.g. supercomputers,
smartphones, laptops, servers, IoT gadgets).
COMPUTER ENGINEERING SPECIALIZATIONS

• Hardware Systems
• Distributed Computing
• Robotics and Cybernetics
• Embedded Systems
• Computer Graphics and Visualizations
• Medical Image Computing
• Computer and Network Security
COMPUTER ENGINEERING SKILLS

• Analytical thinking
• Problem-solving
• Creativity
• Critical thinking
• Attention to details
• Technical writing
• Programming
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

• The rapid development in technology that transformed

society in the late 20th century and continue into the 21st
century were fueled by the work of electrical and computer
engineers. The Internet, personal computers, and wireless
communication are only some of the technologies for which
electrical and computer engineers have been responsible.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

• Computer engineering began in 1939 when John Vincent Atanasoff

and Clifford Berry began developing the world's first electronic digital
computer through physics, mathematics, and electrical engineering.
HISTORY OF COMPUTER ENGINEERING
EDUCATION:

• The first computer engineering degree program in the United States

was established in 1971 at Case Western Reserve University in
Cleveland, Ohio.
• As of 2015, there were 250 ABET-accredited computer engineering
programs in the U.S. In Europe, accreditation of computer engineering
schools is done by a variety of agencies part of the EQANIE network.
COMPUTER PIONEERS

 Blaise Pascal, inventor of the mechanical calculator; 17th century

 Charles Babbage, inventor of the Analytical Engine; 1822
 J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly, builders of ENIAC, and later UNIVAC, the first
computer to be sold commercially; 1946
 Nicholas Metropolis, designer of the MANIAC I computer; 1952
 William Shockley and his team at Bell Labs, inventors of the transistor; 1947
COMPUTER PIONEERS (CONT)

 Seymour Cray, the "Father of Supercomputing"; 1957

 Steve Wozniak, designer of the Apple I and II personal computers and co-
founder of Apple Computer along with Steve Jobs; 1976
 Adam Osborne, developer of the first portable computer, the Osborne 1; 1981
 Douglas Engelbart and Bill English, co-inventors of the computer mouse and
developers of hypertext, computer networks, and the graphical user interface
(GUI). 1963
THE EARLY INNOVATORS IN COMPUTER
SOFTWARE INCLUDE:
 George Boole, who formalized binary (Boolean) algebra;
 Alan Turing, who made enormous contributions to computer science, including
inventing the Enigma code-breaking machine that broke the German ciphers in
World War II and doing pioneering work in artificial intelligence and neural
networks;
 John Backus, leader of the team that invented the first high-level programming
language, Fortran (FORmula TRANslation);
 Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson, developers of the UNIX operating system and
the C programming language;
CONT

 Gary Kildall, founder of Digital Research Inc. and inventor of the CP/M (Control
Program for Microcomputers) operating system;
 Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft Corp.; and
 Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn, inventors of Transfer Control Protocol and Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP) and sometimes referred to as the "Fathers of the Internet."
