Taking Notes Problems in note-taking:
1- too many notes
2- trying to write everything word for word which is of course an impossible task 3- poor preparation: scraps of paper; messy notes What Do We Take Note of? You cannot take note of everything, you cannot do it anyway; Remember taking notes cannot replace your short term memory. It supplements memory. Be selective; we note the essentials, the linking things between ideas, how one idea links with another idea, contrasts between ideas; the transitions; Notes should be written in a clearly set out form to help you move between ideas; How should we take notes? • The essential tools are pen and paper, a spiral-bound pad, • Work vertically: it is easier to write and to recall. • Try not to write everything down • You must retain ideas rather than words in your memory; memory comes first have a proper layout of the page, write keywords, idea reminders, and write those things that help you to remember such as figures, names, dates, etc. How should we take notes? • If it is a longer speech, notes can be a record of the basic information structure of the longer speech; • Take notes in the language that best suits your needs and helps you recall better. • There are commonly used symbols and abbreviations in interpreting, but there is no one way of note-taking; ultimately you have to develop your own system that suits you through your experience. How should we take notes? Using symbols is a very helpful step in taking notes: # number - minus + plus = equal < less than > more than % percentage $ money increase decrease happy sad OK alright w/ with & and Pal Palestinians Isr Israel Egy Egypt Gz Gaza it's all up to you, devise your own symbol system • Use nouns and verbs as they trigger memory • Write consonants without vowels • Take brief notes of concrete information such as names, places, dates, descriptions, years, Note-Taking
