Factors affecting drug responsiveness

Dietary factors

1
Introduction

Response to drugs vary from person

to person. The way a person
responds to a drug is affected by
many factors, including;
• Age
• Genetics
• Weight
• Disease condition
• Dietary

Introduction

Food-drug interactions occur when food or one of its components

interferes with the effect of a drug in the body.

Foods contain active substances that interact against certain medications

to produce unwanted or unexpected effects.

Certain foods when ingested together with certain drugs, may affect the
overall bioavailability, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and
therapeutic efficacy of the medications.

Presence or absence of some nutrients in the gastrointestinal tract and/or

in the body’s physiological system, such as in the blood, can enhance, 3
Dietary influence on dug
responsiveness
Some foods attenuate drug effects by interfering with drug actions,
mechanisms and the pharmacodynamics of the drug.
Examples of such interactions are as follows:

Vitamin K and warfarin interactions

Iodine rich foods and thyroid drugs

Calcium and tetracycline

Dietary influence on dug
responsiveness
On the other side, some foods enhance drug effects or provides
beneficial effects. Examples of such interactions are as follows:

Caffeine and theophylline interaction

High fat foods and lipid soluble drugs. Eg. ARV

protease inhibitors like saquinavir. Griseofulvin.

Vitamin C rich foods enhance absorption of iron

based drugs

Conclusion

Drugs taken orally are absorbed

through the lining of the stomach or
the small intestine just like food.

However, the presence of food in the

digestive tract may reduce or affect
the absorption of a drug.

Thus drugs should be taken

sometime before or after eating
depending on prescription. 7
