What is biomechanics?

What do you think?
What is biomechanics?

bio mechanics

• Application of mechanical principles in

the study of living organisms
• Investigation of the effects of internal and
external forces on human bodies in motion
and at rest.
History of Biomechanics

Deeply rooted scientific origins - Mathematics,
Mechanics, Anatomy, Physiology
• "The science of mechanics is the noblest and above all others the
most useful, seeing that by means of it all animated bodies which
have movements perform all their action.“
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)

Relatively new as a profession - 1967 - First
International Seminar on Biomechanics - identified
biomechanics as a new branch of science

Growing with technology
Why Study Biomechanics?

By understanding mechanical principles
and how they apply to human
movement………..

• then we can apply those principles to

improve…
Goals of Biomechanics are
to improve……..

Performance and/or Function
• Effectiveness: maximization of the output

• Efficiency: economy of energy expenditure

Safety and/or Health
• Protection from acute and chronic injury or disease
(prevention/diagnosis/rehabilitation)

………through better: Technique, Training/rehab methods,

Equipment, Rule changes
Types of Biomechanics

11:59pm tomorrow night

Lab #1 – Finding Biomechanics Sources
(D2L by 11:59 PM Wednesday)
• Complete and be prepared to orally present and
discuss answers to questions in next class.
Lab #1 Discussion
in class next lesson

Each student orally presents their answers to
Lab#1 with a focus on questions:
• #1 - Describe a human movement topic in which
you have a biomechanical interest
• #4 - List 2 biomechanical citations relevant to your
interests (Journal title, Article title, date).
• #5 - Briefly describe the results one of your cited
studies and list at least one of the dependent
variables measured in the study and one type of
biomechanical technology used in the study.
