GOOD MORNING!
Class Objectives:
At the end of the Lesson, the students are expected to:
A. Define weed
B. Identify the different types of weeds
C. Appreciate the importance of weeds in relation to crop
production and human life.
D. Present a creative presentation about different types of
weeds
Classification
Based on morphology, weeds are
generally divided into following groups
GRASSES, SEDGES AND
BROADLEAVES
Grasses: are a family of plants with
leaves that usually look like blades.
Most of them also have hollow
stems and many branching roots.
The green grass found in yards, the
grasses growing on open land,
grains, and bamboos all belong to
the grass family.
Digitaria sanguinalis
is a species of grass
known by its common
name hairy crabgrass.
It is one of the better-
known species of the
genus Digitaria, and
one that is known
nearly worldwide as a
common weed.
Cynodon dactylon
commonly known as
Bermuda grass, is a
prostrate mat-forming
grass and my be the most
serious weed of the grass
family. The stems is very
ramified, spreading at the
soil surface by long
rhizomes and stolons. The
leaves are narrow and with
flat arrangement. The
nodes and leaf sheaths are
commonly known as
carabao grass or hilo
grass, is a tropical to
subtropical perennial
grass. It is originally from
the American tropics, but
has been naturalized
widely in tropical
Southeast Asia and
Pacific Islands. It has also
spread to Northern Africa
and Northern and
Sedges are perennial plants that are commonly found in
shallow water or moist soils and can reach 4 feet in height.
They resemble grasses and often grow in thick clusters.
Cyperus rotundus,
commonly known as
purple nutsedge is a
species of sedge
(Cyperaceae) Purple
nutsedge is a perennial
grass-like weed with
triangular stems that
grow up to 1-3 feet (30-
90 cm) tall.
- Leaves are flat, linear,
and dark green with a
distinctive purple or
reddish tint at the base.
Scirpus or
bullrush grass is
a genus of grass-
like species in the
sedge family
Cyperaceae many
with the common
names club-rush,
wood club-rush or
bulrush. They
mostly inhabit
wetlands and damp
locations.
Cyperus flavidus –
Yellow Flatsedge.
Yellow Flatsedge is a
clustered annual or
perennial herb. Stems
are trigonous,
smooth, 5-60 cm high,
1-1.5 mm in diameter.
Leaves are shorter or
longer than stems,
mostly 1-2 mm wide
Broadleaved weeds, as their name suggests, often have wide leaves and grow from
a stem. Most broadleaf weeds develop clusters of blossoms or single flowers as they
mature that can be considered undesirable. The roots of most broadleaf weeds are
fibrous in nature. The roots can be thin, a large taproot, or a combination.
Amaranthus spinosus,
commonly known as the
spiny amaranth, spiny
pigweed, prickly
amaranth or thorny
amaranth, is a plant that
is native to the tropical
Americas, but is present on
most continents as an
introduced species and
sometimes a noxious weed.
The common chickweed, or
stitchwort (Stellaria
media), is native to Europe
but is widely naturalized. It
usually grows to 45 cm (18
inches) but becomes a low-
growing and spreading
annual weed in mowed
lawns. It can be eaten raw or
cooked as a vegetable and is
often added to salads
Eclipta alba (also known as
Eclipta prostrata Roxb.)
belongs to the Asteraceae
family and is commonly known
as false daisy in English
Appearance: False Daisy has
oval-shaped leaves, 2-5 cm
long, and small white or
yellowish flowers with 4-6
petals.
2. Growth: Erect or prostrate
stems, 10-60 cm tall, with a
spread of 20-40 cm.
3. Roots: Taproot with fibrous
Instruction:

The class will be divided into 3 groups. Each

group will create a compilation of the
different types of weeds. Give at least three
samples of weeds in each type and indicate
its common name. Be creative because you
will present the output to other group.
Direction: Enumerate the following statements being
given. Write your answers in a ¼ sheet of paper, each
question is equivalent into two points
Assignment
Make a Research about all the methods of Weed control and
write it on a one whole sheet of paper
Without hard work, nothing grows but weeds. Weeds
are flowers too, once you get to know them.
Although the life of a person is in a land full of
thorns and weeds, there is always a space in which
the good seed can grow.
