Conditional Sentences

often uses “if "to introduce
the condition. There are for
main types of conditional
sentences, each with it’s own
structure and use
Zero Conditional
Used for general truths or habitual actions
that are always true if the condition is met. It
uses the present simple tense in both the if-
clause and the main clause.
• Structure: If + present simple, present
simple
•Example: "If you heat water to 100°C, it
boils."
First Conditional
Used for real and possible situations in the
future. It expresses a likely outcome if the
condition is met.
• Structure: If + present simple, will + base
form of the verb
• Example: "if it rains tomorrow, we will
cancel the picnic."
Second Conditional
Used for hypothetical or unlikely situations in
the present or future. It expresses what could
happen if the condition were met.
• Structure: If + past simple, would + base
form of the verb
• Example: "If I had a million dollars, I would
travel the world."
Third Conditional
Usedfor hypothetical situations in the past. It
expresses what could have happened if the
condition had been met.
•Structure: If + past perfect, would have +
past participle
•Example: "If she had studied harder, she
would have passed the exam."
Mixed Conditionals
Sometimes, the condition and result refer to
different times. For example:
•Present result of a past condition: If + past
perfect, would + base form
Example: "If he had left earlier, he would be here
now."
• Past result of a present or ongoing condition:
If + present simple, would have + past
participle
Example: "If she were more diligent, she would
Key Points to Remember:
• The zero conditional deals with facts
and general truths.
• The first conditional is about real
possibilities in the future.

past hypotheticals.
