INTRODUCTION
TO ARCGIS
DESKTOP
ARCGIS DESKTOP PRODUCTS

ArcGIS Desktop consists of four different products

which differ in their functionality

 ArcReader
 ArcView (Basic)
 ArcEditor (Standard)
 ArcInfo (Advanced)

Extensions of ArcGIS – spatial analyst, geostatistical

analyst and 3D analyst
FUNCTIONALITY OF DIFFERENT PRODUCTS OF ARCGIS DESKTOP

Basic, Standard, and Advanced (formerly ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo) are licensing levels
for ArcGIS for Desktop applications.

 Basic provides data visualization, query, analysis, and integration capabilities along
with the ability to create and edit simple geographic features.

 Standard includes all the functionality of Basic and adds a comprehensive set of tools
to create, edit, and ensure the quality of your data.

 Advanced includes all the functionality of Standard and adds advanced spatial
analysis, data manipulation, and high-end cartography tools.

There are five basic ArcGIS Desktop modules. Each modules contains
different methods of dealing GIS data
ArcMap

It is used for all mapping and editing

tasks, as well as map-based analysis
like geo-processing.

6
ArcCatalog

It is the application for managing spatial

data holdings, for managing database
designs, and for recording and viewing
metadata. ArcCatalog is used to browse,
organize, distribute and document your
GIS data. Geoprocessing can also be
performed

7
ArcToolbox

It offers the tools for GIS data conversion

and geoprocessing tasks. ArcToolbox for
ArcInfo comes with a complete,
comprehensive set of tools (well over
150) for geoprocessing, data conversion,
map sheet management, overlay analysis,
map projection, and much more; a lighter
version comes with Basic and Standard.

8
ArcScene

It is good for Interactive “Fish tank”

view and for a small scale range. It is
best at rendering geometry.

9
ArcGlobe

It is used for Interactive Global and

3D viewing. It is optimized to multi-
scale viewing. It is great for very
large raster data and it also support
vector and 3D symbols

ArcGIS Extensions
Extensions add more capabilities to ArcGIS for Desktop with extensions.

WORKSPACES
ARCGIS WORKSPACES

ArcGIS generally recognizes different types

of workspaces:

 Folders
 Geodatabases
FOLDERS

Folders may contain other folders,

geodatabases, data sources (e.g., rasters,
shapefiles, tables, etc.), and toolboxes.
Some data sources (coverages, shapefiles,
TIN datasets, layers, and layer files) can
only live inside folders. Other data sources
(raster data, feature classes, and tables,
and more) can be exported from a folder
to a geodatabase.
GEODATABASE

Geodatabases are an organized way to

keep similar data together. Anything that is
relevant stays in a single database.
For example, a city might have their
wastewater division, land records,
transportation and fire departments
connected and using different
geodatabases.
