1. Definition of Lubricant.
• Is any material applied on moving parts to reduce friction, heat and wear.
• Friction is created when there is relative motion between two surfaces.
• Lubrication is use of a material between surfaces to reduce friction
2. Functions of Lubricants.
• Lubricant reduce friction
• Improves fuel economy-Reduce friction on moving parts.
• Reduces build up of sludge & deposits.
• Heat transfer from engine to cooler by circulation oil(cooling).
• Condition seals in the engine.
• Prevents Corrosion-Protects metal surfaces from rusting.
• Capture contaminants, dirt & sludge.
• Protection from wear & tear-create lubricating films.
3. Components of a lubricant.
• Base oil (70-90%) + Additives (10-30%).
• Base oil -are oils produced by refining crude oil.
• Additive-are Organic or inorganic compounds.
Engine Oil Classification
 Viscosity Grade Classification (a measure of a fluid's resistance to flow).
 Grade of a lubricant is determined by the Society of Automotive Engineers(SAE)
e.g. SAE 15W-40
 It characterizes the viscosity for warm (100oC) and cold (40oC) temperatures of
the lubricant - Behaviour of the oil as a function of the temperature
 Service Rating Classification
 American Petroleum Institute (API) e.g. API CF-4/SG among others - JASO e.t.c
 The higher the API number the better quality the crude oil.
Viscosity Grades - Viscosity is a measure of a fluid's resistance to flow.
 Monograde - Oils meeting the requirements of one SAE viscosity grade
SAE 20W (winter grade).
SAE 40 (summer grade).
 Multigrades - Oils meeting the requirements of more than one SAE viscosity grade
classification. 
 Combine winter and summer grades into just one lubricant.
Example: -SAE 10W-40
Has the low temperature properties of SAE 10W winter grade.
