PRE-HISPANIC ERA

Our early literature came in the form we know now call


FOLKLORE.
Folklore comes from the words “FOLK” and “LOVE”
Folk means PEOPLE and Lore means KNOWLEDGE,LEARNING,
or body of traditions of a particular group of people or race.

Filipino Folklore means the total sum of our peoples


customs,traditions,beliefs,ways of life and practices with its
roots deeply embedded in the past.

A Literary historian, Prof. Otley H. Beyer divides folklore into
several branches such as;
-Mythology and beliefs
-Magic tales and folktales
-Fable and Animal stories
-Local legends
-Ancient poetry, that comes in the form of;
(folksong, riddles, proverbs and maxims, wise saying and
superstitious beliefs)
All these are important for aside from coming from the grassroots
to reflect the beginning of our literature.

The Spanish Conquistadores led by Legaspi began their settlement in
the island in 1565. thus, began the Spanish period in the literature of
the Philippines.

The Spanish missionaries made use of literature to introduce


Christian Religion and to eventually convert the natives.
Religion poetry like, Pasion,Awit,Corrido,religious hymns and prayer
and dramatic forms like, Autosacramentales,Cenaculo,and Moro-moro
Became the instruments of the friars in christianizing of Filipinos.

The lives of saints in glory,mysteries,miracles and religion in general,


become the common subject matters of the time.
LITERATURE DURING THE SPANISH REGIME
The last part of the Regime, however, saw the emergence

of Filipino writters craving for social reforms and


independence from the rule of the Spanish authority in the
Philippines.
Nationalistic literature came to be written. Patriots like
Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Apolinario Mabini, Emilio
Jacinto and Jose Palma, were some of those who wrote
about social and political themes.
Revolutionary and propagandist literature abound until
after the execution of Rizal.
The revolution broke out in 1898 and later, with the Treaty
of Paris, spain ceded the Philippines to another foreign

By the end of the Spanish rule in the Philippines,


the Filipino writters were already writing
The Five Distinct types of Literature;
POETRY, SHORT STORY, ESSAY, DRAMA, and
NOVEL

Writers of the Era wrote in the different dialects


in Tagalog and Spanish.
The Literature of this period in spite of its
limitation and deficiency is a concrete expression
