PIECEWISE
FUNCTIONS
OBJECTIVES
■Define piecewise function.
■Graph piecewise function.
■Represents real-life situations
using functions, including
piecewise functions.
PEICEWISE FUNCTION is a function defined
by two or more equations where each
equation applies to a certain interval over a
specified domain.

A piecewise function is a
function in which more than one
formula is used to define the
output over different pieces of the
domain.
A piecewise function is a function in which more
than one formula is used to define the output. Each
formula has its own domain, and the domain of the
function is the union of all these smaller domains.
We notate this idea like this:
EXAMPLE 1:

A museum charges $5 per person for a guided tour with a

group of 1 to 9 people or a fixed $50 fee for a group of 10 or
more people. Write a function relating the number of people,
n, to the cost, C.

Two different formulas will be needed. For n-

values under 10, . For values of n that are 10 or
greater, .
The graph is a diagonal line from to and a constant
after that. In this example, the two formulas agree at
the meeting point where , but not all piecewise
functions have this property.
EXAMPLE 2:
Scenario: Taxi Fare Calculation

Imagine you're taking a taxi, and the fare is calculated as

follows:
• For the first 2 kilometers: the fare is fixed at $5.
• Each additional kilometer: The fare is $2 per kilometer.
We can represent this situation with a piecewise
function.
Where:

The fare is $5.

LET’S HAVE A
GAME!
Tricycle Fare
Challenge
Calculate the correct tricycle fare
using a piecewise function. The team
with the most points at the end wins!
A tricycle ride costs ₱20.00 for every 1 kilometer,
and each additional kilometer adds ₱5.00 to the
fare. Use a piecewise function to represent the
tricycle fare in terms of the distance d in
kilometers.
𝑓 ( 𝑑 )=
{ 20 ,𝑖𝑓 𝑑=1
20 +5 ( 𝑑 −1 ) ,𝑖𝑓 𝑑> 1

The input value is the distance(kilometer) and the

output value is the cost of tricycle fare.

Therefore, the cost of a tricycle ride
within10 kilometers is ₱65.00
