IELTS READING SKILLS

WHAT IS IELTS
READING?
Reading is the second part of IELTS test, and
takes 60 minutes. It consists of three or
sometimes four reading passages of
increasing diffi cultly, and there is a total of
40 questions to answer on the reading
answer sheets, be aware that no extra time
is given for transferring your answers.

SKILL 1: SKIMMING AND SCANNING
• Skimming the text - give it a quick read to understand its
overall meaning, once you understand what the text is
about, it will be easier to find the specific information you
need to answer the questions.

Most IELTS question types involve using skimming and
scanning, for example:
• Matching Paragraph
• True/False/Not Given / Yes/No/Not Given
• Summary Completion. etc

SKILLS 3 - PARAPHRASING AND SYNONYMS
• Paraphrasing is when the wording changes but the
same meaning is retained. It can be done with
synonyms, changing the grammatical structure and the
use of set phrases.
• IELTS often paraphrases the text in the questions.

• Matching Sentence Ending.

• Summary Completion

SKILL 4 - READING FOR DETAIL
• Detailed understanding is necessary for answering specific
questions.
• After you skim and scan the text, if you find the answer in a
paragraph, read that paragraph in more detail. This means
reading the section, or even the whole paragraph, word for
word to fully understand what it says.

The Thames Tunnel was a tunnel built under the River Thames in London. It was
the first subaqueous tunnel ever built and many people were so amazed that
they exaggerated their description of it calling it the Eight Wonder of the World
at the time it was opened.

SKILL 5 - INFERRING MEANING FROM CONTEXT
Understanding unknown words or ideas using surrounding
words or sentences. You can looking at the sentences
before the unknown word and the sentences after it.

In Europe, it was traditional to use dyed and painted chicken eggs at Easter, but
a modern custom is to substitute chocolate eggs, or plastic eggs filled with
confectionery such as jelly beans. Easter eggs are a widely popular symbol of
new life in Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, and other Central
European countries where they are concealed in the garden for children to find.
