Balancing chemical Equations

Chemistry
Quarter 4
At the end of this lesson, the learners
will be able to:

 apply the principles of conservation of mass in balancing

chemical reactions; and
 draw and balance chemical equations.
Recall
⃞A chemical equation is a way
chemists use to describe the changes
that happen in a chemical reaction.

C + O2 CO2
(reactant) (reactant) (product)

C + O2 CO2
(reactant) (reactant) (product)

Reactants are the starting Symbols Meaning

substances in a chemical (s) Solid
(l) Liquid
reaction (g) Gas
(aq) aqueous or in water solution
Products are the new + reacts, combines, or and
produces, yields
substances formed from the reversible reaction
reactants.

Word Equation

⃞ Word equation helps in reading

and interpreting a chemical equation.
From the given chemical equation, let
us transform it into a word equation.

C + O2 CO2
Carbon Oxygen Carbon dioxide

Carbon reacts with oxygen to yield Carbon dioxide.

Carbon combines with oxygen to produce Carbon

dioxide.
Let Us Discuss

2 CO2

C is for Carbon

O is for oxygen

2 (subscript) represents that there are 2 oxygen

2 (coefficient) represents that there are 2 sets of CO2

Illustrate the molecular structures of the given chemical formulas
of molecules and compounds.

2 O2 2 CH2
H2

O O H H H C H

O O H H
C
Law of Conservation of Mass
The total mass of the reactants is equal
to the total mass of the products.

C + O2 CO2
Balancing Equation

To fulfill the Law of Conservation of

Mass, balancing equation is
needed to attain the same number
of atoms on the reactants and on
the product.
Important reminders in balancing
equations:
 In balancing never change the formula
of the reactants and products
specifically the subscripts.
 Balance the chemical formulas by
adding a numerical coefficient at the
left side of an element or compound.
 To check if the chemical formula is
balanced, multiply the coefficient to
the subscript.
Let us Balance

N2 + 3 H2 2 NH3

Reactant Product

N= 2 N= 1 2
H= 2 6 H= 3 6
Let’s Practice

H H O H
O O
H C H O C O

H O O H O H

Reactant Product

C= 1 C= 1

H= 4 H= 4

O= 4 O= 4
⃞ Let’s Practice Again

6 4
Let’s practice Once More

2 2
____ K + O2 → ____ K2O

Reactant Product

K= 1 2 4 K= 2 4

O= 2 O= 1 2
Balance this
Equation
2
____H 2 1
2O → ____H2 + ___ O2

Reactant Product

H= 2 4 H= 2 4

O= 1 2 O= 2
