OPERATION OF

FUNCTION
Definition: Let f and g be
function.
Their sum, denoted by f
+ g, is the function
defined by (f + g)(x) =
f(x) + g(x)
Example

 f(x) = 2x – 6 , g(x) = 3x + 2
 f(x) = 3x + 25 , g(x) = x – 5
Their difference, denoted
by f – g is the function
defined by
(f – g)(x) = f(x) – g(x)
Example

 f(x) = 4x – 5 , g(x) = 2x
 f(x) = x + 5 , g(x) = 2x – 1
Their product
denoted by f g
is the function
defined by (f g) =
f(x) g(x)
Example

 f(x) = 6x + 1 , g(x) = 2x + 9
 f(x) = 2x – 5 , g(x) = x – 4
Their quotient denoted
by
(f/g)(x) = f(x) / g(x)
Example

 f(x) = , g(x) = x + 1
ACTIVITY 1
Use the given function of f and g to
find f + g , f – g , fg and f/g.

1. f(x) = g(x) =
2. f(x) = 5x + 1, g(x) = 3x – 2
3. f(x) = 3x + 5 , g(x) = 2x – 7
4. f(x) = , g(x) = x+1
5. f(x) = , g(x) = x - 2
