Domain and Range
Domain and Range
OF FUNCTIONS
Objective:
Determine the domain and the range of a
function
ONCHING D.
PONCE
MEM 106
There are two important sets of
elements in every function. These are domain
and range.
The domain D of a function can be
defined as the set of all x-coordinates in the set
of ordered pairs, while the set of all y-
coordinates is referred to as its range R. The
elements of the domain and range of a function
are usually written in increasing or decreasing
manner.
Example 1. Determine the domain and range of
the following functions.
a. y = 2x – 3 d.
h(x) = 5
b. f(x) = e. y
=
c. g(x) = |-2x|
Solution:
a. Domain = {x|x is the set of real
numbers}
Range = {y|y is the set of real numbers}
b. f(x) =
Solution:
Domain = {x|x is the set of real numbers}
Range = {y|y ≥ 0}
or {y|y is the set of real numbers greater than
or equal to 0}
c. g(x) = |-2x|
Solution:
Domain = {x|x is the set of real numbers}
Range = {y|y ≥ 0}
d. h(x) =
5
Solution:
Domain = {x|x is a real number}
Range = {y|y = 5}
e. y =
Solution:
Domain = {x|x is the set of real
numbers not equal to 2}
Range = {y|y is the set of real
numbers not equal to 1}
