◦ MUSCLES OF TONGUE
◦ ARTERIAL SUPPLY
◦ VENOUS DRAINAGE
◦ LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
◦ NERVE SUPPLY
◦ TASTE PATHWAY
Introduction
◦ The tongue is a muscular organ on the floor of the mouth
◦ It is associated with functions of speech, chewing, taste and deglutition
◦ The tongues consists of different parts – root, tip and a body
Papillae of the tongue
◦ Circumvallate papillae
◦ Fungiform papillae
◦ Filiform papillae
◦ Filiform papillae
◦ Foliate papillae
◦ Circum vallate papillae
◦ They are also known as vallate papillae
◦ They are large in size
◦ Located infront of sulcus terminalis

◦ Fungiform papillae
◦ They are numerous near tip and margins of tongue
◦ They have bright red color
◦ Filiform papillae
◦ Also known as conical papillae
◦ They give characteristic velvety appearance
◦ They cover presulcal area of the dorsum tongue

◦ Foliate papillae
◦ They are leaf shaped
◦ They are found infront of circumvallate papillae
MUSCLES OF THE TONGUE
◦ INTRINSIC MUSCLES
◦ EXTRINSIC MUSCLES

◦ INTRINSIC MUSCLES –
◦ Superior longitudinal
◦ Inferior longitudinal
◦ Transverse
◦ Vertical
MUSCLES OF TONGUE
◦ EXTRINSIC MUSCLES – GHSP
◦ Genioglossus
◦ Hyoglossus
◦ Styloglossus
◦ Palatoglossus

◦ Please refer table of extrinsic muscles origin and insertion

◦ Muscle action table
MUSCLES OF THE TONGUE
ARTERIAL SUPPLY
◦ Arterial supply is derived from the lingual artery
◦ Root of tongue is supplied by the –

1. Tonsillar artery (BRANCH OF FACIAL ARTERY)

2. Ascending pharyngeal artery (BRANCH OF EXTERNAL CAROTID)
VENOUS DRAINAGE
◦ DEEP LINGUAL VEIN – CHIEF VEIN OF TONGUE
◦ VENAE COMITANTES ACCOMPANYING THE LINGUAL ARTERY
◦ VENAE COMITANTES ACCOMPANYING HYPOGLOSSAL NERVE
LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
◦ TIP OF TONGUE DRAINS BILATERALLY INTO SUBMENTAL LYMPH NODES
◦ ANTERIOR 2/3 RD OF TONGUE UNILATERALLY INTO SUBMANDIBULAR LYMPH NODES
◦ POSTERIOR 1/3RD AND POSTERIOR MOST PART OF TONGUE DRAIN BILATERALLY INTO
THE UPPER DEEP CERVICAL LYMPH NODES
◦ THE WHOLE LYMPH FINALLY DRAINS INTO THE JUGULOOMOHYOID NODES THESE
ARE KNOWN AS THE LYMPH NODES OF THE TONGUE
NERVE SUPPLY
◦ MOTOR NERVE SUPPLY –
◦ All intrinsic and extrinsic muscles get supplied by the hypoglossal nerve except
palatoglossus
◦ Palatoglossus gets supplied by the cranial root of accessory nerves

◦ SENSORY NERVE SUPPLY –

◦ Anterior 2//3rd –
Lingual nerve is nerve of general sensation
Chorda tympani is the nerve of taste except for vallate papillae
NERVE SUPPLY
◦ Posterior 1/3rd of tongue –
Glossopharyngeal nerve for general sensation and taste

◦ Posterior most part of tongue –

It is supplied by vagus nerve
