Composite functions

Contents Objectives: to be able to,

1. Composite notation. • substitute numbers into two functions,

2. Subbing into a two functions. • make up a composite function in x.

3. Composite questions.
Prior knowledge: you should already know
4. Forming composite functions.
how to,
5. Composite questions 2.
• understand the term function,

• be able to substitute numbers into a

function.
Composite Notation

A composite function is when 2 functions, or more are put together. There are two
different forms of writing this,

f  g( x )
Both of these require us to substitute
g(x) into f (x).
fg(x)
Substituting numbers into two functions
f (x) x 2 , x 0 Use the functions opposite to find,
g(x) x  3, x  

f  g(4) This requires subbing 4 into g(x), 1. f  g(6) 81

taking the answer and subbing it
into f (x).
2. g  f (6) 39
g(4) 7
f  g(4) 72 3. gf (0) 3
f  g(4) 49

gf (2) This requires subbing 2 into f (x), 4. fg( 2) 1

taking the answer and subbing it
into g(x).
5. ff (3) 81
f (2) 4

gf (2) (4) 3
6. ggg(9) 18
gf (2) 7
Composite Questions 1
f (x) x 2  4, x 0 5. hh(5) 35
g(x)  x  1, x 0
h(x) 2 x  5, x  
6. fg(15) 12
Use the functions above to find,

1. fg(8) 5 7. fh  f (2) 21

2. g  h( 1) 2
8. gg(3) 3

3. fh (3) 117 9. h  f (3) 15

4. ff (3) 21 10. h  g  f (2) 7

Making composite functions

f (x) x 2  3, x 0
gf (x) This requires subbing f (x) into g(x).
g(x)  x  5, x 5

f  g(x) This requires subbing g(x) into f (x). gf (x)   f ( x )  5

2
f  g(x)  g(x)  3
f  g(x)  (x 2  3)  5
2

f  g( x )  x 5  3

f  g( x )  x 2  2
f  g(x) x  5  3

f  g(x) x  2
Composite Questions 2
3. fh (x), write your answer in the
f (x) x 2  4, x 0
form fh (x) ax 2  bx  c.
g(x)  x  1, x 0
h(x) 2 x  5, x  
fh (x) 4 x 2  20 x  21
Use the functions above to find the following
composite functions. Simplify your answers
where possible. 4. ff (x)

1. f  g(x) ff (x) x 4  8 x 2  12

f  g(x) x  3 5. gf (x)

gf (x)  x 2  3
2. gh(x)

gh(x)  2 x  6 6. hf (x)

hf (x) 2 x 2  3
